Christian Horner’s prospects for a Formula 1 return, particularly in an ownership capacity, have faced a significant clarification. Chinese manufacturer BYD, with whom Horner had been linked for a potential 12th F1 team entry, recently stated it has no active project to join the championship.

Stella Li, BYD’s executive vice president, confirmed this week at the Goodwood Festival of Speed that while an F1 entry remains a ‘dream’, there is no specific plan currently underway. This directly impacts one of the speculated high-profile moves for the former Red Bull boss.

Horner was dismissed as Red Bull Racing CEO and Team Principal on July 9, 2025, concluding a two-decade tenure with the team. His departure followed a period marked by internal power struggles and a decline in the team’s 2025 performance.

He had overseen Red Bull’s rise to prominence, securing eight Drivers’ and six Constructors’ Championships during his leadership. Laurent Mekies, formerly of Racing Bulls, assumed the role of Red Bull Racing CEO and Team Principal immediately after Horner’s exit.

Following his dismissal, Horner was subject to a period of gardening leave, which included contractual restrictions preventing his attendance at Formula 1 events for several months. His non-compete period expired earlier this year, making him a free agent.

Horner made his first return to the F1 paddock at the British Grand Prix in early July 2026, almost exactly a year after his Red Bull departure. This appearance reignited speculation regarding his future in the sport.

He has consistently maintained that any return to Formula 1 would only be in a position offering significant influence, allowing him to ‘drive difference’ and pursue victories. Horner has expressed no interest in merely being ‘a number in a machine’.

Beyond the BYD link, Horner has been associated with other teams. He was part of a group of investors reportedly interested in acquiring a 24% stake in Alpine, currently owned by Otro Capital.

Alpine confirmed in January 2026 that Horner was among those expressing interest in an investment. However, Renault CEO Francois Provost has indicated that Alpine’s immediate priority is competitive stability, not selling shares.

Aston Martin was another team mentioned as a potential destination, particularly for a reunion with Adrian Newey. However, Lawrence Stroll, Aston Martin’s owner, reportedly stated internally that Horner joining the team is ‘absolutely not happening’.

FIA President Mohammed Ben Sulayem has publicly hinted at Horner’s eventual return to Formula 1, stating his belief that ‘He will get back’. The specific nature of this return remains unconfirmed.

Meanwhile, Red Bull Racing currently sits fourth in the 2026 Constructors’ Championship. The team has yet to secure a Grand Prix victory this season, a contrast to their dominant years under Horner’s leadership.
