Fernando Alonso has outlined his intentions for life beyond his Formula 1 driving career, with a decision on his future for the 2027 season expected during the upcoming summer break. The two-time world champion is evaluating his options, while Aston Martin navigates a challenging period during the current 2026 season.

Alonso confirmed his ambition to compete in and win the Dakar Rally. He previously participated in the demanding off-road event in 2020 with Toyota Gazoo Racing, finishing 13th overall. This challenge remains a significant goal for the Spaniard.

Beyond the Dakar Rally, Alonso also expressed interest in further endurance racing. He mentioned the possibility of competing in other events, particularly if Max Verstappen were to pursue endurance racing in the future. Alonso is a two-time winner of the Le Mans 24 Hours, securing victories in 2018 and 2019, and also claimed the FIA World Endurance Championship super season title.

The current Aston Martin driver also indicated a desire to remain with the team in a non-driving capacity once his active Formula 1 career concludes. Alonso joined Aston Martin in 2023, having previously stated his expectation to maintain a long-term association with the Silverstone-based outfit.

Alonso, who will turn 45 later this month, highlighted his extensive experience within the sport. He stated, ‘When I stop racing, I would like to stay with this team in a different role to help.’ He added, ‘I have been in Formula 1 for 26 years now, and I think I can still contribute a lot to this team.’

His experience is considered a valuable asset for Aston Martin. Alonso believes his expertise can continue to benefit the team’s development and performance. He prefers to utilise his knowledge to advance the team rather than disengage from motorsport entirely.

Aston Martin’s Executive Chairman, Lawrence Stroll, has previously indicated a strong desire to retain Alonso within the broader Aston Martin organisation beyond his driving commitments. This could involve a brand ambassadorial position or a technical advisory role, leveraging Alonso’s deep understanding of Formula 1.

Alonso’s current contract with Aston Martin extends until the end of the 2026 Formula 1 season. His discussions regarding 2027 and beyond are therefore focused on either a further driving extension or a transition into a new role within the team structure.
