Peter Windsor has voiced concerns that the 2026 Formula 1 regulations are diminishing the impact of elite driver talent. He argues that the new rules are flattening the performance gap between top drivers and the rest of the grid.

Windsor specifically cited Max Verstappen and Charles Leclerc as drivers whose unique skills are no longer providing the same advantage. He believes the new cars, with their near 50-50 split between combustion and electrical power, are central to this shift.

According to Windsor, the skills that once allowed top drivers to excel in challenging cars, such as instinct, car control, and bravery on corner entry, are now less rewarded. He stated that drivers like Leclerc and Verstappen no longer possess the same distinct edge.

This perspective suggests a potential change in the sport’s identity, where unique driver traits might become less visible. Windsor’s analysis, delivered early in the 2026 season, highlights a significant debate within the paddock.

Despite these broader concerns, Windsor has offered specific praise for Andrea Kimi Antonelli’s performance during the current 2026 season. Antonelli is leading the drivers’ championship after securing four victories in the opening five races.

Windsor noted Antonelli’s ability to minimise damage during races, a trait he compares to Max Verstappen’s own skill set. He drew a parallel between Antonelli’s recovery ability and that of Nigel Mansell.

‘Of course he makes mistakes, but he minimises the damage in a way only Max can do. Maybe Charles can do it a bit too,’ Windsor stated.

Max Verstappen, currently not in title contention this season, recently advised Antonelli to focus on minimising mistakes for consistent performance. Windsor endorsed this counsel as essential for the young Mercedes driver’s debut year.

Verstappen’s future remains a subject of speculation, despite his contract with Red Bull Racing extending until the end of 2028. A challenging start to the 2026 season, placing him seventh in the standings, has fueled rumors of a potential departure.

Windsor has commented on the possibility of Verstappen moving to Mercedes for the 2027 season. He suggested that Mercedes would prioritise signing Verstappen if the opportunity arose, even if it meant negotiating an exit for George Russell.

However, Windsor also indicated that Verstappen might be disinclined to partner with Antonelli at Mercedes. Antonelli’s strong championship lead could influence Verstappen’s considerations for a future team.

Windsor views Verstappen as the ‘gold standard’ in Formula 1. His observations underscore a period of significant regulatory impact on driver dynamics and ongoing shifts in the driver market.
