Peter Windsor observed a strategic decision by Toto Wolff during the recent Dutch Grand Prix, contrasting it with the race’s early incident involving Max Verstappen. Windsor’s comments focused on Mercedes’ decisive team orders at Zandvoort. This came after Verstappen’s significant early exit from his home race.

Max Verstappen experienced a heavy crash on the opening lap of the Dutch Grand Prix on August 23, 2026. Running in seventh position, Verstappen lost control of his Red Bull RB22 in the final corner. His car then speared into the barrier.

The impact caused the car to slide back across the track into the opposite wall, necessitating an immediate red flag. Verstappen confirmed he was unhurt and apologised to his team. Pre-race rain had left the Zandvoort circuit damp.

Verstappen later indicated he was caught out by a wet patch and a sudden power surge from his power unit. Nico Rosberg suggested Verstappen took a tighter line and applied too much throttle. Ralf Schumacher attributed the crash to frustration and difficult conditions.

During the same race, Mercedes implemented a strategic team order involving George Russell and Kimi Antonelli. On lap 66, Russell was instructed to allow Antonelli to pass him. This decision was made in the closing stages of the Grand Prix.

The team order aimed to prevent an internal battle between the Mercedes drivers. It also sought to protect Antonelli’s lead in the Drivers’ Championship. Mercedes secured a double podium finish with Antonelli in second and Russell in third.

Toto Wolff, Mercedes Team Principal, justified the decision by referencing the team’s established policy. He stated that the team avoids losing time with each other when competitors are close behind. Wolff described the switch as a logical consequence.

George Russell complied with the instruction, despite initial frustration over the radio. He later explained that the team’s rules dictate inverting positions when on different strategies. Russell acknowledged Antonelli deserved second place.

Windsor highlighted Mercedes’ clear communication and execution of team orders. This contrasted with Ferrari’s handling of Lewis Hamilton and Charles Leclerc at Zandvoort. Ferrari’s hesitation ultimately cost them a potential podium finish.

Antonelli currently leads the 2026 F1 Drivers’ World Championship with 242 points. He holds a 59-point advantage over George Russell and Lewis Hamilton, who are tied for second place.
