James Vowles, Team Principal of Williams Racing, has consistently highlighted the profound influence of figures like Lewis Hamilton and Michael Schumacher on his leadership philosophy. Vowles maintains that valuable lessons can be extracted from every individual encountered in Formula 1, a principle he applies within his current role.

Vowles, who previously worked with both Hamilton and Schumacher during his tenure at Mercedes, has often detailed their distinct qualities. He has described Hamilton as possessing ‘oodles of natural talent,’ noting his exceptional ability to manipulate car settings and explore braking limits.

Hamilton’s approach to car development and his relentless pursuit of performance have been a recurring theme in Vowles’ observations. He likened Hamilton’s intricate adjustments on the steering wheel to an ‘octopus’ constantly optimising performance.

This season, Lewis Hamilton has achieved significant success with Ferrari, securing his maiden victory for the team at the Barcelona-Catalunya Grand Prix in June. This win marked his 106th career Grand Prix victory and Ferrari’s first of the 2026 season.

Regarding Michael Schumacher, Vowles has emphasised the seven-time world champion’s extraordinary capacity to extract maximum performance from both himself and every member of his team. Schumacher’s genuine interest in his team members was a defining characteristic, fostering a strong collective effort.

Despite these insights into high-performance cultures, Williams Racing is currently navigating a challenging 2026 Formula 1 season. The team sits eighth in the constructors’ championship, having accumulated only 11 points after nine races.

This represents a significant downturn compared to their performance at the same stage in 2025, when they had secured 54 points. The team’s FW48 car was notably overweight at the start of the season, and recent upgrades introduced at Silverstone failed to deliver the anticipated performance improvements.

Vowles has initiated a two-week internal review of Williams’ development programme. He stated that the rate at which the team is bringing performance to the car is currently insufficient to move them forward.

‘I would say right now what’s clear is our rate of bringing performance to the car – which is a little bit nuanced in how I mean that – is not at the rate required in order for us to move forward,’ Vowles commented.

The review will encompass the entire opening phase of the season, not solely the Silverstone performance. Vowles expects this evaluation to inform the team’s strategy for upcoming races in Spa and Budapest, as well as their plans for the 2027 season.
