Max Verstappen has returned from the Formula 1 summer break, preparing for what will be the final Dutch Grand Prix at Circuit Zandvoort. The upcoming race weekend marks a significant moment for the four-time world champion at his home circuit. Verstappen spent his downtime with Kelly Piquet and their daughter Lily.
The family holiday included time in Sardinia during July, where Piquet shared images on Instagram. These posts depicted Verstappen engaging in activities such as paddleboarding and jet-skiing with Piquet and Lily.
Verstappen’s 2026 Formula 1 season has presented challenges, with the Red Bull driver yet to secure a victory. He has recorded four podium finishes, with his best result being a second place at the Hungarian Grand Prix.
Currently, Verstappen holds sixth position in the drivers’ championship standings. He trails Mercedes driver and championship leader Kimi Antonelli by 110 points.
Red Bull’s RB22 car has faced performance issues, particularly on the chassis side, and has been noted for excess weight. This has contributed to a performance deficit compared to key rivals.
Mercedes began the 2026 season with a strong advantage, achieving a one-two finish in Australia. However, Ferrari, McLaren, and Red Bull have progressively narrowed this performance gap.
Ferrari has demonstrated strong race pace and effective starts, with Charles Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton securing third and fourth places respectively in Australia. Mercedes Technical Director James Allison noted significant aerodynamic gains under the new regulations.
The Dutch Grand Prix will conclude its run on the Formula 1 calendar after the 2026 season. Formula 1 and the event promoter confirmed a one-year contract extension in December 2024, ensuring Zandvoort’s presence through 2026.
The decision to not continue beyond 2026 was made by the promoter, citing financial risks. This occurred despite Formula 1’s interest in a longer extension.
The 2026 Dutch Grand Prix will also feature a Sprint race for the first time at the Circuit Zandvoort. This adds a new element to the final event.
Verstappen has a strong record at Zandvoort, having won the first three editions of the revived Grand Prix in 2021, 2022, and 2023. He finished second in both 2024 and 2025.
For this final home race, Verstappen has unveiled a special Delftware-inspired helmet design. This custom livery acknowledges the significance of the event.
Uncertainty surrounds Verstappen’s long-term future, with a contract clause allowing him to potentially leave Red Bull before his 2028 agreement concludes. However, concrete options with other leading teams for 2027 appear limited.
