Max Verstappen retired from the Dutch Grand Prix at Zandvoort on Sunday, August 23, 2026, after crashing on the second lap of the race. The incident occurred at the highly banked final turn, the Arie Luyendykbocht.
A sudden, heavy downpour approximately 30 minutes before the 3 p.m. race start left the final sector of the circuit dangerously damp and slick. Despite this, all 22 drivers opted to start the race on slick tyres.
Verstappen, driving the Red Bull RB22, admitted the crash was his own error. He stated he took the corner too tight, causing his tyres to slip on the wet road. Onboard cameras showed the rear of his car snapping sideways into the concrete barrier.
The impact severely damaged the side and suspension of his car, sending it bouncing back onto the track. Verstappen was uninjured and exited the wreckage, reporting he was ‘okay’ to his team.
The incident triggered an immediate red flag, suspending the race for approximately 25 to 40 minutes due to debris on the track.
Audi driver Gabriel Bortoleto was directly impacted by the aftermath of Verstappen’s crash. He was forced to aggressively spin his own car to avoid colliding with Verstappen’s stranded vehicle and the carbon-fibre debris.
Bortoleto himself had a near-miss earlier through the same final corner, managing to complete a spin without hitting the wall. This experience provided direct insight into the treacherous track conditions that contributed to Verstappen’s accident.
The crash concluded a challenging home Grand Prix weekend for Verstappen. He had qualified seventh on Saturday and finished sixth in the sprint race earlier in the weekend.
Verstappen had also been battling an illness, describing flu-like symptoms, throughout the weekend. He confirmed his condition after qualifying but asserted it was not affecting his performance.
Speaking ahead of Sunday’s race, Verstappen noted an improvement in his condition overnight, stating he felt ‘a little better today.’ He had previously mentioned feeling unwell and lacking energy.
This event marked the final Dutch Grand Prix at Zandvoort for the foreseeable future, as the circuit’s contract with Formula 1 is not being extended beyond the 2026 season.
Earlier in the week, Verstappen had signed a contract extension with Red Bull Racing, committing him to the team until at least the end of the 2030 season.
Lando Norris of McLaren ultimately won the Dutch Grand Prix, with Kimi Antonelli and George Russell, both from Mercedes, completing the podium. Liam Lawson, standing in for Isack Hadjar at Red Bull, finished seventh.
