Red Bull Racing is currently facing a challenging 2026 Formula 1 season, with the team yet to secure a victory. Technical Director Pierre Wache has acknowledged ‘limitations’ within the RB22 chassis, which has impacted the car’s drivability and overall speed. The team currently sits fourth in the constructors’ standings.

Max Verstappen has openly expressed his frustration with the car’s performance throughout the first half of the season. He has cited issues with the engine, balance, understeer, and oversteer, indicating a struggle to find rhythm with the RB22.

Despite these difficulties, Verstappen has continued to deliver notable performances. At the Hungarian Grand Prix, he secured an unexpected second-place finish after starting from sixth on the grid. This followed a qualifying spin, demonstrating his ability to recover.

F1 observers note that Verstappen’s consistent ability to extract performance, even from a challenging car, means he cannot be discounted by competitors. His resilience remains a significant factor in the championship.

The Red Bull-Ford power unit has emerged as a strong component among the new 2026 engines. Its performance has at times allowed the team to opt for higher downforce configurations, compensating for aerodynamic weaknesses.

However, the primary issues for Red Bull lie with the chassis and aerodynamics, particularly a deficit at the rear of the car. Modifications to the sidepod layout have been implemented to improve load distribution and mid-corner stability.

The team’s decision to delay development of the 2026 car, focusing instead on the RB21 during the 2025 season, is believed to have contributed to their current struggles. This strategic choice has left them playing catch-up.

Verstappen himself has described the first half of the season as ‘tough’ and highlighted the need for more overall performance and consistency from the car. He aims for more straightforward race weekends.

Speculation regarding Verstappen’s future has surfaced, with some pundits suggesting he might consider an exit from Red Bull due to the team’s current trajectory. His contract includes a break clause that is now in effect.

Verstappen has also been vocal about his dissatisfaction with the 2026 regulations, famously describing the new cars as ‘Formula E on steroids.’ He has consistently questioned the direction of the sport’s technical era.

In a separate incident earlier this season, Verstappen refused to begin a media session at the Japanese Grand Prix until British journalist Giles Richards departed. This stemmed from a question regarding a 2025 collision.

Red Bull’s technical director Pierre Wache stated that the team has made ‘progress’ in addressing the RB22’s limitations. The focus remains on understanding and improving the car’s fundamental characteristics.
