Sky Sports commentators are interpreting Max Verstappen’s recent radio outbursts as being linked to his ongoing contract negotiations with Red Bull Racing. The driver’s public frustration coincides with a critical phase in his career decisions.

During the recent Hungarian Grand Prix weekend, Verstappen was audibly critical of his car. He described the RB22 as suffering from ‘car degradation’ rather than typical tyre issues and at one point called it ‘undriveable’.

His complaints continued during the race, where he finished second. In an untelevised message, Verstappen labelled Racing Bulls drivers Liam Lawson and Arvid Lindblad ‘morons’ for impeding him while being lapped.

These displays of discontent occur as a performance-related exit clause in his contract has reportedly become active. Verstappen’s current deal runs until 2028, but his position outside the championship top three allows him to leave at the end of the 2026 season.

He currently sits seventh in the Drivers’ Championship standings after the race in Hungary. This situation has fuelled speculation about his future, with links to McLaren being reported.

In response, Red Bull has reportedly offered Verstappen a new contract extending his term to the end of 2029. The proposal includes a significant salary increase but would remove the performance clauses that give him an exit option.

According to reports, the offer has been with Verstappen’s management for several weeks, but a formal response has not yet been provided. Verstappen himself has refused to commit to the team publicly when questioned on the matter.

Sky Sports pit reporter Ted Kravitz noted that Verstappen has few credible alternatives, with top teams like McLaren and Mercedes having settled driver line-ups. Martin Brundle shares this view, stating his ‘gut feeling’ is that Verstappen will remain at Red Bull.

Meanwhile, Sky Deutschland pundit Ralf Schumacher suggested Verstappen’s driving style could be a factor in the car’s issues. Schumacher proposed that the driver may be demanding too much from a car that has less downforce than in previous seasons.
