Former Formula 1 driver Juan Pablo Montoya has publicly criticised Max Verstappen for his ongoing complaints regarding the 2026 F1 regulations and the performance of the current Red Bull RB22. Montoya suggested that the FIA should consider imposing penalties on Verstappen for his remarks.

Montoya’s comments, made in May and July 2026, follow Verstappen’s descriptions of the new 2026 cars as ‘anti-racing’ and akin to ‘Formula E on steroids’. The Colombian believes such public criticism disrespects the sport.

Speaking on the BBC’s Chequered Flag podcast, Montoya stated that drivers should respect the sport they compete in. He argued that there should be consequences for speaking negatively about the foundation of their profession.

‘You’ve got to respect the sport. For me, what the drivers are doing, I’m okay with you not liking the regulations, but the way you were speaking about what you’re living off and your own sport, there should be consequences for that.’

Montoya went further, suggesting that the FIA could impose penalty points on Verstappen’s super licence, potentially leading to a race suspension. He indicated this would send a clear message to all drivers.

Verstappen has dismissed Montoya’s criticism, labelling his comments as ‘nonsense’. The four-time world champion questioned why individuals who ‘spout so much rubbish’ are employed by Formula 1 management.

The Red Bull driver’s frustrations stem from the current 2026 season, where the RB22 has presented significant challenges. Recent incidents include rear wing failures at both the Austrian and British Grands Prix.

At the British Grand Prix earlier this month, Verstappen crashed out due to a rear wing malfunction, describing the car as ‘dangerous’. He had previously requested significant changes to the RB22, which Red Bull denied.

Verstappen’s dissatisfaction extends to the car’s energy deployment, understeer, and overall balance. He currently sits seventh in the drivers’ championship, having not secured a victory this season.

The ongoing performance issues and Verstappen’s vocal discontent have fueled speculation regarding his contract with Red Bull. Reports suggest an exit clause could be activated if he falls outside the top two in the championship standings by October.

Red Bull Racing has acknowledged the car’s struggles, particularly on tracks with strong energy limitations. Team Principal Laurent Mekies admitted the team is working to address the issues.
