Max Verstappen has called for increased government support for motorsport within the Netherlands. The Red Bull driver emphasised the need to foster new talent to maintain the sport’s popularity in the country.

Verstappen stated that the sustained interest in motorsport largely depends on emerging drivers reaching Formula 1, which generates significant public engagement. He highlighted Germany’s past decline in motorsport interest as a cautionary example.

The Dutch Grand Prix at Circuit Zandvoort is scheduled to conclude its tenure on the Formula 1 calendar after the 2026 season. This decision was made by the race promoters.

Organisers cited the financial challenges of hosting the event without government funding as a primary reason for their decision. The Dutch Grand Prix operates as a privately owned entity.

Robert van Overdijk, Director of the Dutch Grand Prix, confirmed that the event relies solely on sponsors and ticket revenue. He noted that three consecutive days of sold-out tickets are essential for profitability.

The Dutch government has historically maintained a stance against providing financial subsidies for the Grand Prix. This position dates back to at least 2019.

Verstappen’s success is widely credited for the return of the Dutch Grand Prix in 2021 after a 35-year absence. He has secured three victories at his home race since its reintroduction.

The 2026 Dutch Grand Prix, scheduled for August 21-23, will mark the final edition at Zandvoort. This event will also feature a Sprint race for the first time at the circuit.

Looking ahead, Verstappen has expressed a preference against the addition of further street circuits to the Formula 1 calendar as potential replacements for traditional venues.

The Knac National Autosport Federation (KNAF) serves as the recognised motorsport federation in the Netherlands. It oversees the organisation and safety standards for karting and motorsport events nationwide.

‘Hopefully, the government will also step up to the plate,’ Verstappen stated. ‘Support is important at certain times. Everyone has seen what motorsports can bring. Just look at Germany.’
