Max Verstappen returns to the Sepang International Circuit this weekend, aiming for his first Grand Prix victory of the 2026 Formula 1 season. The Malaysian Grand Prix makes a one-off return to the calendar, replacing a cancelled Middle East race due to ongoing regional conflict.
Verstappen, who celebrated his 29th birthday this week, last won at Sepang in 2017. That victory marked his second career Grand Prix win. He currently holds 71 career victories, but the 2026 season has proven challenging for Red Bull Racing.
The Dutchman secured a second-place finish at the Azerbaijan Grand Prix last weekend, narrowly missing victory by 0.196 seconds behind Mercedes’ George Russell. Red Bull teammate Isack Hadjar completed the podium in third, marking the team’s first double podium of the season.
Red Bull Racing has experienced an inconsistent 2026 season, currently sitting fourth in the Constructors’ Championship with 186 points and no wins. Verstappen is sixth in the Drivers’ Standings with 112 points.
Mercedes, meanwhile, has confirmed significant aerodynamic upgrades for their W17 car at Sepang. Team Principal Toto Wolff stated this update is an important step, particularly after recent races on less conventional tracks.
Verstappen acknowledged the challenge posed by Mercedes’ upgrades, stating it would make Red Bull’s pursuit of a win even more difficult. Mercedes has won 11 of the 15 Grands Prix held this season.
The Sepang International Circuit, located near Kuala Lumpur, is a 5.543 km track known for its wide layout, long straights, and high-speed corners. It features 15 turns and offers multiple overtaking opportunities.
The circuit is physically demanding due to high temperatures and humidity, with drivers potentially losing several kilograms during the 56-lap race. The weather forecast for the weekend indicates unpredictable conditions, including potential monsoon rains.
Pirelli has selected the C2, C3, and C4 compounds for the event, a slightly more aggressive choice than a conservative trio. This aims to provide a broader strategic range for teams.
The track surface is relatively abrasive, comparable to Bahrain, and grip levels are expected to improve throughout the weekend. Thermal management will be a key factor for tyre performance.
The 2026 F1 season is entering a demanding final phase, with six Grand Prix weekends scheduled over the next seven weeks. This includes races in Singapore, the United States, Mexico, Brazil, Las Vegas, and Qatar, before the Abu Dhabi finale.
Verstappen will also compete with his GT team in the World Challenge in Portimão during the sole F1-free weekend in mid-October. He expressed enjoyment for the Portimão circuit.
