Max Verstappen has posted a farewell message for the Dutch Grand Prix following the final Formula 1 race at Zandvoort. His race ended prematurely after a crash on the opening lap in front of his home supporters.

The 2026 event marked the last edition of the race on the F1 calendar. Verstappen’s final home race concluded when he lost control in the banked final corner on a damp track, hitting the barrier.

The incident caused significant damage to his Red Bull car and triggered a red flag, requiring the intervention of track marshals to clear the circuit. Verstappen later took full responsibility for the crash.

In a social media post after the race, the four-time world champion reflected on the event’s return to the calendar in 2021. He did not specifically mention the marshals, who are unpaid volunteers.

‘Zandvoort. I’m incredibly proud of what we’ve had here. What once seemed impossible became something really special. It means a lot that I got to be part of it. I’ll always remember this. Thank you.’

The Zandvoort marshals have become well-known for their enthusiastic atmosphere, often seen dancing trackside between sessions. They have been a notable feature since the Dutch GP returned after a 36-year absence.

Ahead of the weekend, Verstappen had already paid tribute to the Dutch fans. He wore a special helmet with a design inspired by traditional Delftware ceramics to commemorate the final race at the circuit.

The driver stated that racing in front of his home crowd since 2021 has been a privilege and a highlight of his career. The Dutch Grand Prix will not feature on the Formula 1 calendar from 2027.
