Max Verstappen has formally extended his contract with Red Bull Racing, committing to the team until the conclusion of the 2030 Formula 1 season. The announcement, made on Thursday, August 20, 2026, precedes his home event, the Dutch Grand Prix. This development concludes months of speculation surrounding the four-time world champion’s future in the sport.

Verstappen indicated that his decision to remain with Red Bull came after considering a departure from Formula 1 entirely, rather than a transfer to another team. He stated he was closer to stopping his career than switching teams due to dissatisfaction with current regulations.

The Dutchman expressed contentment with the contract extension, citing his belief in the team’s personnel and their collective ambition to regain top performance. He also highlighted Red Bull’s flexibility in allowing him to pursue non-F1 racing activities as a contributing factor to his commitment.

Red Bull Racing has experienced a challenging start to the 2026 season under the new technical regulations. The team currently holds sixth position in the Constructors’ Championship standings, trailing behind both Haas and Alpine.

The 2026 campaign marks the debut of Red Bull’s proprietary power unit, developed in partnership with Ford. However, the RB22 car has encountered issues with balance, race-pace consistency, and the new power unit, which has not consistently met the team’s performance expectations.

Verstappen has been a vocal critic of the 2026 F1 regulations, particularly concerning the heavy emphasis on energy management and the 50/50 split between electrical and combustion power. He argues that these rules diminish a driver’s ability to influence race outcomes and lead to what he describes as ‘artificial’ racing.

The four-time champion has openly stated his frustration with repeatedly articulating his concerns regarding the current car performance and the nature of racing. F1 CEO Stefano Domenicali acknowledged Verstappen’s grievances earlier this season, affirming that his input ‘has to be listened to’.

Looking ahead, discussions are underway regarding the next generation of power unit regulations, slated for introduction in 2031. FIA President Mohammed Ben Sulayem has expressed a clear objective to reintroduce V8 engines by 2031 at the latest.

Ben Sulayem advocates for V8 engines due to their lighter weight, simpler design, and cost-effectiveness. He also emphasizes their ability to deliver the ‘unique, visceral sound’ that fans associate with Formula 1, while still being compatible with sustainable fuels.

Beyond Formula 1, Verstappen has actively engaged in endurance racing. He made his debut at the Nürburgring 24 Hours in May 2026, competing with Mercedes-AMG in a GT3 car fielded by Winward Racing, with support from Red Bull.

His participation included preparatory events, such as NLS2 in March 2026. Verstappen previously secured a victory in his GT3 debut during the Nürburgring Endurance Series in September 2025.

The Red Bull team has undergone significant personnel changes in recent years, including the departures of key figures such as Helmut Marko, Adrian Newey, and Christian Horner. Laurent Mekies assumed the role of Team Principal in July 2025, overseeing a rebuilding phase.

Isack Hadjar joined Verstappen as Red Bull’s primary driver for the 2026 season, replacing Yuki Tsunoda, who transitioned to a reserve driver role. For the upcoming Dutch Grand Prix, Liam Lawson will substitute for an injured Isack Hadjar.

‘I am really pleased with the contract extension. We have the best people and I’m excited to keep working together with everyone to get back to the top again,’ Verstappen stated.
