Max Verstappen has formally committed his future to Red Bull Racing, signing a contract extension that will keep him with the team until the conclusion of the 2030 season. The announcement was made on Thursday, August 20, 2026, ahead of the Dutch Grand Prix weekend, effectively ending months of speculation regarding his position within the team.

The four-time world champion’s previous agreement was set to expire at the end of 2028. That deal notably included performance-based exit clauses, which had fueled discussions about a potential departure, particularly given Red Bull’s performance challenges under the current 2026 regulations.

Verstappen addressed the media in Zandvoort, stating that he was ‘closer to retiring than changing team’ during the period of uncertainty. He reiterated his confidence in Red Bull’s project and the leadership of Team Principal Laurent Mekies, despite the team’s struggles to match Mercedes’ pace this season.

Formula 1 contracts are widely recognized as some of the most confidential agreements in professional sports. These documents extend beyond mere employment terms, functioning as comprehensive commercial control instruments designed to mitigate risk for the teams.

Such contracts encompass a broad spectrum of obligations, including sporting services, commercial and promotional rights, image usage, driver availability, and conduct. Performance-linked pay and various exit mechanisms are also standard components.

Jos Verstappen, Max’s father, confirmed that the new long-term contract with Red Bull continues to incorporate confidential performance-related agreements. The specific criteria for these clauses remain undisclosed, maintaining the customary secrecy surrounding such details.

Modern F1 contracts frequently include stipulations concerning race etiquette, data confidentiality, and internal team cooperation. Mercedes driver George Russell, for instance, has previously indicated that his contract contains clauses designed to manage potential on-track incidents, particularly with Verstappen.

The FIA’s Code of Ethics mandates strict confidentiality for any information communicated to parties in the execution of their duties. This regulatory framework underscores the pervasive nature of secrecy within Formula 1’s contractual landscape.

While the exact financial terms of Verstappen’s new deal are not publicly disclosed, reports suggest an annual salary in the region of $100 million. This substantial commitment from Red Bull is described by the team as a ‘powerful statement of mutual trust and ambition.’
