Max Verstappen has officially committed his future to Red Bull Racing, signing a contract extension that will keep him with the team until the conclusion of the 2030 Formula 1 season. The announcement was made today, August 20, 2026, ahead of the Dutch Grand Prix, Verstappen’s home race.

The four-time Drivers’ World Champion’s previous agreement was set to expire at the end of the 2028 season. However, speculation regarding his future intensified due to Red Bull’s performance challenges under the current 2026 regulations and Verstappen’s public criticism of the new rules.

Red Bull Racing issued a statement describing the extension as a ‘powerful statement of mutual trust and ambition’. The team also highlighted the partnership as ‘one of the most successful and defining partnerships in F1 history’.

Verstappen expressed his satisfaction with the new deal, stating that the team feels like ‘a second family’ to him. He reiterated the collective goal to ‘get back to the top again’ following a challenging period for the Milton Keynes outfit.

Laurent Mekies, Red Bull Racing Team Principal, commented on the significance of retaining Verstappen. He called it ‘fantastic news for everyone at Red Bull, Oracle Red Bull Racing, as well as F1 and motorsport as a whole’.

The 2026 Formula 1 season has seen Red Bull struggle with the new technical regulations, resulting in a drop in their competitive standing. Mercedes has emerged with a dominant car this year.

Verstappen currently holds sixth position in the Drivers’ Championship, trailing current leader Kimi Antonelli by 110 points. He has secured two second-place finishes during the current season.

The 2026 regulations have introduced a greater emphasis on the electrical components of the power units. The Motor Generator Unit-Heat (MGU-H) has been removed, and the Motor Generator Unit-Kinetic (MGU-K) now delivers a significantly increased maximum power output of 350 kW.

The FIA’s objective for these regulations was to achieve an approximate 50% electrical contribution to the car’s power. This shift necessitates extensive battery management by drivers throughout a race.

Drivers must manage energy carefully, as the battery cannot be fully recharged on every lap, even with braking energy recovery. This can lead to ‘super clipping’, where the car automatically reduces power on full throttle to recharge the battery.

Verstappen has been vocal about his dissatisfaction with these new regulations, particularly the increased focus on energy management. This sentiment is shared by several other drivers on the grid.

Rival drivers have reacted to Verstappen’s contract extension. Fernando Alonso, driving for Aston Martin, stated, ‘He is probably the best in the paddock, so it is good to have him in Formula 1.’

Nico Hülkenberg, who races for Audi, expressed no surprise at the news. He noted Verstappen’s passion for racing and competition, affirming that ‘F1 is still the peak of motorsport.’

Mercedes driver George Russell commented, ‘This is still the top of motorsport… you get nowhere else the kick of racing against the best drivers in the world.’

Lando Norris, the reigning 2025 World Champion with McLaren, remarked, ‘You know it never with Max. He wants to prove that he is the best in the world and there is no other place to do that than Formula 1.’

Pierre Gasly, from Alpine, called the extension ‘good news for the sport’. He added, ‘He is perhaps the best driver of our generation.’

Gabriel Bortoleto, also an Audi driver, acknowledged the previous rumours of Verstappen’s potential departure. He stated, ‘It is good if a four-time world champion stays, for entertainment and racing.’
