Max Verstappen executed a significant overtaking maneuver during the Hungarian Grand Prix on Sunday. The Red Bull driver, starting from fourth position, quickly advanced through the field.
Early in the race at the Hungaroring, Verstappen first passed Charles Leclerc. He then proceeded to overtake both Liam Lawson and Lewis Hamilton in a single move.
This triple overtake occurred at Turn 1, drawing immediate attention. Viaplay commentators described the action as a ‘Verstappen-special’.
They further characterized the maneuver as ‘a moment of brilliance’. The move quickly became a focal point of the early race proceedings.
Despite the successful pass, Verstappen voiced dissatisfaction over his team radio. He specifically cited Lewis Hamilton’s braking technique during the overtake.
Verstappen stated, ‘I want not to complain, but he was moving again under braking.’ He added, ‘I mean, it’s a nice action, but that’s not good.’
The Dutch driver also reported ongoing issues with his Red Bull car. He highlighted problems with the shifting mechanism and aerodynamic instability.
Verstappen noted a significant loss of downforce, which made the car difficult to control. He described the car as ‘breaking out completely’ during critical moments.
These performance concerns extended from Saturday’s qualifying session. Verstappen had qualified sixth but started the Grand Prix from fourth.
His improved grid position resulted from grid penalties applied to both Lewis Hamilton and Kimi Antonelli. The specific infringements leading to these penalties were not detailed.
Verstappen expressed frustration with the recurring technical difficulties. He stated, ‘There is always something that doesn’t work or breaks. I’m quite fed up with it.’
He also questioned the car’s potential for the race. Verstappen remarked, ‘With this quali, yes,’ referring to his dissatisfaction with the qualifying performance.
