Max Verstappen voiced strong criticism of Visa Cash App Racing Bulls drivers Liam Lawson and Arvid Lindblad during the Hungarian Grand Prix on July 26, 2026. The Red Bull Racing driver labelled the lapped competitors ‘morons’ over team radio.
The incident occurred as Verstappen navigated traffic while competing for position, ultimately securing second place. Onboard footage from his car showed Lawson and Lindblad continuing to battle each other into Turn 2, impeding Verstappen’s progress.
Verstappen’s frustration was evident in his radio communication, where he demanded penalties for both Racing Bulls drivers. He stated, ‘Oh, they should get a penalty this is f*ing ridiculous these morons. My god.’
Following the race, the FIA confirmed a technical system failure at the Hungaroring circuit. This malfunction specifically impacted the electronic blue flag displays on trackside panels and within driver cockpits.
Race control was consequently forced to revert to manual marshalling for blue flags, relying solely on physical flags. This situation led to inconsistent warnings and widespread confusion among drivers regarding lapped traffic.
FIA Sporting Regulations for the current 2026 season stipulate that a driver about to be lapped must allow the faster car to pass at the first available opportunity. Failure to comply with blue flags can result in penalties.
Liam Lawson is currently in his second full season with Visa Cash App Racing Bulls. His teammate, Arvid Lindblad, is a rookie who was promoted from Formula 2 for the 2026 Formula 1 season.
Beyond the traffic incident, Verstappen expressed significant dissatisfaction with the balance of his Red Bull RB22 car throughout the race weekend. He described the Hungarian Grand Prix as ‘one of the hardest races of this year.’
Despite these challenges, Verstappen secured second place behind McLaren’s Lando Norris. He admitted to being perplexed by achieving a podium finish given his struggles with the car’s performance.
Verstappen also reported discovering damage to his car after the race. This damage likely contributed to the handling difficulties he experienced throughout the event.
