Max Verstappen has voiced strong criticism regarding the current 2026 Formula 1 regulations, describing the racing as a ‘joke’ amidst Red Bull Racing’s performance challenges this season. The four-time World Champion currently sits P6 in the Drivers’ Championship standings with 109 points after 11 rounds.

Red Bull Racing is positioned fourth in the Constructors’ Championship, a notable shift from their dominant form in previous seasons. Verstappen has secured four podium finishes this year, with his best results being two second-place finishes in Austria and Hungary.

The Dutchman’s season has been marked by a lack of victories, a significant departure from his record-breaking campaigns in 2022 and 2023, where he achieved 15 and 19 wins respectively. Red Bull’s RB22 car has faced considerable issues, including severe balance problems and understeer.

Verstappen has openly stated that the car is ‘completely undriveable’ at times, highlighting a lack of grip and significant time loss in corners. These issues have also contributed to rapid tyre degradation during races.

The team has experienced reliability concerns, with Verstappen retiring from the Chinese Grand Prix due to an ERS issue and from Monaco after failing to get off the line. A rear wing fault also led to a retirement in Great Britain.

Verstappen has emphasized the need for Red Bull to address these fundamental performance deficits. He stated that the team’s ‘big priority’ for the second half of the 2026 season is to find more overall performance.

‘We need to first find more overall performance. And then we need to fix our problems, where we sometimes just lose performance over a weekend, or even from the start of the race to the end. So, yeah, that is actually a big priority,’ Verstappen commented.

The 2026 regulations have introduced an ‘enormous’ rate of development, with Mercedes technical director James Allison noting aerodynamic gains six to seven times greater than last season. This regulatory shift has impacted the competitive order.

Despite the challenges, Verstappen maintains an 8-3 lead over teammate Isack Hadjar in qualifying head-to-head battles. Hadjar sits P8 in the Drivers’ Championship with 68 points.

The current situation contrasts sharply with Verstappen’s previous four consecutive Drivers’ Championships from 2021 to 2024. The focus for Red Bull remains on understanding and rectifying the car’s performance inconsistencies to return to winning contention.
