Max Verstappen’s contract with Red Bull Racing has seen a performance clause activate, potentially allowing him to depart the team for the 2027 Formula 1 season. The four-time world champion is currently sixth in the 2026 drivers’ standings, falling outside the top two positions required by the summer break to keep the clause inactive.

Red Bull has reportedly responded by offering Verstappen a new contract extending until the end of 2029. This proposed deal includes a significant salary increase and the removal of the existing performance-based exit clause.

Verstappen’s future is a central factor in the 2027 driver market, with his decision expected to influence movements across the grid. Speculation has linked the Dutch driver to potential moves to Mercedes or McLaren.

Laurent Mekies, Red Bull team principal, has acknowledged the challenges facing Red Bull Powertrains in its debut 2026 season. He anticipates ‘struggles, headaches, and sleepless nights’ as the team develops its own power unit.

Despite these concerns, the FIA’s Additional Development and Upgrade Opportunities (ADUO) findings surprisingly identified Red Bull Powertrains’ internal combustion engine as the benchmark. Mekies has indicated he will seek clarification from the FIA regarding this assessment.

The 2026 season has been described by Verstappen as ‘bumpy’ for Red Bull. He secured a second-place finish at the recent Hungarian Grand Prix, where Lando Norris claimed victory.

Oscar Piastri, Norris’s teammate, initially led the Hungarian Grand Prix but retired due to a gearbox failure following contact with Carlos Sainz. This incident ended Piastri’s bid for a podium finish.

Isack Hadjar, Verstappen’s current teammate at Red Bull, has demonstrated consistent performance this season. Fans largely support an extension of his contract beyond 2026.

The driver market for 2027 is seeing other significant developments. Fernando Alonso is reportedly considering a return to Alpine, citing Aston Martin’s underwhelming 2026 performance.

Carlos Sainz is linked with a potential move to Aston Martin if Alonso departs, and also to Audi for the 2028 season. George Russell is also speculated to be evaluating options with Audi for 2028.

Former Red Bull motorsport advisor Helmut Marko departed the team at the end of 2025. Gwen Lagrue, previously with Mercedes, has been appointed as the new director of the Red Bull Junior Programme, commencing in 2027.

Juan Pablo Montoya has commented on Aston Martin’s engine strategy, suggesting the team would have been more competitive had they retained Mercedes power units instead of switching to Honda.

‘When Newey came in, the car was pretty much done,’ Montoya explained. ‘He had input, but the design was already locked in. If they’d had Mercedes power now, they’d be among the top teams.’

Montoya also theorized that Mercedes might be concealing significant pace for the 2026 season.
