Max Verstappen has addressed his long-term future in Formula 1, stating his continued passion for racing despite current performance challenges with Red Bull’s 2026 challenger. The four-time world champion, aged 28, indicated that while he could consider retirement, his enjoyment of the sport remains a primary motivator.
Speaking ahead of the Hungarian Grand Prix, Verstappen acknowledged the ongoing difficulties with the team’s car. He highlighted the inconsistency that has plagued Red Bull Racing this season, noting that strong weekends are often followed by races marred by various issues.
Verstappen emphasised his focus on improving the current car, stating, ‘I say I have nothing to report because nothing is going on. I am 28 and can naturally stop, but I love racing and try to deal with what we have.’
He added, ‘Although that is currently not what I love.’ The Dutchman’s contract with Red Bull Racing extends until the end of the 2028 season, providing stability amidst the team’s development efforts.
Red Bull has been working to understand the fundamental characteristics of their 2026 car. Verstappen pointed to a near-victory in Austria and a strong performance at Spa-Francorchamps as examples of the car’s potential, which the team aims to replicate more consistently.
Despite the challenges, Verstappen expressed cautious optimism regarding the team’s progress. He noted an upward trend in performance, with the team making tangible steps forward. However, he also acknowledged the competitive landscape, where other teams could introduce updates and gain significant time.
Verstappen reiterated his long-standing criticism of the current F1 car regulations, particularly concerning the semi-electric power units and their impact on racing. He described the energy management requirements as complex and unnatural.
Drivers have frequently complained about depleting batteries, a lack of engine power, and what Verstappen terms ‘artificial’ overtaking manoeuvres. He stated that many now openly support his views, which he has held for years.
‘In the beginning, people thought I was just complaining and should shut up. It has nothing to do with me not winning races, but everything to do with my love for this sport.’
Verstappen clarified that his concerns stem from a desire for genuine racing, where aggressive overtaking in corners is rewarded, rather than relying on push-button overtakes on straights. He believes the current regulations penalise drivers for gaining time in corners.
The four-time champion explained that drivers must constantly adapt their driving style, citing a half-second per lap loss at Spa if he had not adjusted. He described the current situation as ‘weird, not natural, not logical, and far too complicated.’
The FIA has acknowledged driver feedback regarding the 2026 power unit regulations, which aim for increased electrical power and sustainable fuels. Discussions are ongoing to refine aspects of the technical framework to ensure competitive and engaging racing.
