Max Verstappen has voiced significant dissatisfaction with the 2026 Formula 1 regulations, describing the current racing as ‘very artificial’. The four-time world champion stated he is ‘fed up’ with reiterating his concerns regarding the new technical framework. His criticisms, initially dismissed, are now gaining traction within the sport.

The core of Verstappen’s discontent lies with the revised power unit regulations, which mandate a 50:50 split between internal combustion engine (ICE) and electric energy. This represents a substantial shift from the previous 80:20 ratio.

This increased reliance on electrical power necessitates extensive energy management during races. Drivers are reportedly losing power on straights as batteries deplete, creating considerable speed differentials and potential safety hazards.

Verstappen argues that this system forces unnatural driving techniques. He noted that gaining time in corners can subsequently penalise a driver on the following straight, effectively ‘neutralising a lot of lap time’.

‘You need to be different, and basically it is just neutralising a lot of lap time. And that’s why, I guess, in general, you see a lot of close battles between teams and teammates. Because you just cannot make a difference. Like you’re not allowed to make a difference. Because it will just penalise you on the next straight.’

The FIA acknowledged in August 2026 that simulations conducted in 2022 had identified the battery depletion issue. However, proposed solutions were reportedly blocked by engine manufacturers due to significant investments in the new hybrid systems.

Beyond the power unit, the 2026 regulations introduced a comprehensive overhaul of aerodynamics and chassis design. Cars are now smaller and lighter, with the maximum wheelbase shortened to 3400mm and width reduced to 1900mm.

Downforce has been cut by 30 per cent and drag by 55 per cent, alongside a minimum weight reduction to 768kg. Active aerodynamics are now a permanent feature, allowing movable front and rear wings to switch between ‘Z-Mode’ for cornering and ‘X-Mode’ for low-drag on straights.

An ‘Overtake Mode’ has also been introduced, providing an attacking car with additional electrical power when within one second of a rival. Amendments to energy management parameters were approved on February 28, 2026, including a reduction in maximum permitted recharge and an increase in peak superclip power.

Other drivers, including Lewis Hamilton, Lando Norris, Charles Leclerc, Carlos Sainz, and Lance Stroll, have also expressed reservations about the new rules. Hamilton described the rulebook as complex, while Stroll labelled the regulations ‘sad’.

Red Bull Racing, with their new RB22 powered by a Red Bull-Ford unit, has yet to secure a victory in the 2026 season. Verstappen currently sits sixth in the Drivers’ Championship standings, having achieved multiple podium finishes but no wins.

Red Bull Technical Director Pierre Waché maintains that race wins remain the team’s primary objective for the season. The team is implementing a continuous development roadmap for the RB22 to address aerodynamic and power unit efficiency challenges.

Laurent Mekies, who assumed the role of Chief Executive Officer and Team Principal of Red Bull Racing in July 2025, has overseen the team’s efforts to adapt to the new regulations.

Meanwhile, Arvid Lindblad made his Formula 1 debut this season with Racing Bulls at the Australian Grand Prix. The 18-year-old is the sole rookie on the 2026 grid, driving car number 41.
