Max Verstappen has commented on Fernando Alonso’s potential Formula 1 retirement, suggesting the Spaniard is in a different position regarding his future in the sport. Verstappen believes Alonso, at 45 years old, has already completed a comprehensive career. This contrasts with Verstappen’s own situation, as he is 28 and still has many years ahead if he chooses to continue racing.
Both drivers have voiced significant criticism regarding the current 2026 Formula 1 regulations. The new power unit rules, which mandate a 50% combustion engine and 50% electrical power split, have been a particular point of contention. This technical shift forces drivers into extensive battery harvesting strategies.
Alonso described the driving experience under these regulations as requiring ‘no talent’. Verstappen echoed this sentiment, labelling the new rules as ‘anti-racing’ and likening the experience to ‘Formula E on steroids’. The 2026 power units feature a significantly increased electrical output, rising from 350kW to 475kW, alongside the removal of the MGU-H component.
Furthermore, the regulations include a reduced fuel allowance, which necessitates more lift-and-coast driving. This aspect contributes to the perception that the cars are heavier and potentially slower on straights, impacting the racing spectacle. The FIA and Formula 1 have acknowledged driver feedback on these changes.
Alonso stated in Hungary that his future decision hinges on the regulations, not the performance of Aston Martin’s B-Spec AMR26. He clarified that his choice for the 2027 season would not be based on the team’s current performance, which he deemed ‘not realistic’.
‘Driving these cars in places like Spa or Silverstone [at the] last race is not what I’m dreaming of for my future. So we’ll see,’ Alonso explained.
Verstappen fully agreed with Alonso’s assessment of the regulations. He noted that Alonso’s age and career achievements make it ‘probably easier for him to say ‘I quit” compared to a younger driver.
Verstappen expressed a desire to see Alonso race longer, stating, ‘I would love to see Fernando race until he’s 60, but I don’t think that’s realistic in Formula 1.’ He added that it is challenging for a ‘real racer’ when not enjoying the regulations or being competitive.
The Dutchman acknowledged his own position, being 28 years old. He stated he could ‘easily stop’ but loves racing and is ‘just trying to deal with what we have, even though what we have at the moment is not what I like’.
Amidst these discussions, speculation persists regarding Verstappen’s future beyond Red Bull. Multiple reports have suggested he is nearing the conclusion of negotiations with McLaren for a potential switch in upcoming seasons, despite his current Red Bull contract extending until the end of 2028.
However, Verstappen reiterated his commitment to Red Bull during the Hungarian Grand Prix weekend. He described the team as ‘like a second family’ to him, dismissing ongoing transfer rumours. He affirmed his focus remains on extracting maximum performance from his current car.
Aston Martin, like other teams, is actively developing its AMR26 chassis and power unit integration for the current season. Alonso’s comments on the B-Spec AMR26 indicate the team’s ongoing efforts to improve performance throughout the 2026 campaign.
