Former Formula 1 driver and current Viaplay analyst Giedo van der Garde has commented on George Russell’s ongoing frustrations during the 2026 Formula 1 season. Van der Garde stated that Russell ‘should just not complain’ regarding his performance issues.

Russell has openly expressed significant frustration with his Mercedes W17 car, particularly following the qualifying session for the Belgian Grand Prix on July 18, 2026. He qualified fourth, half a second behind teammate Kimi Antonelli, but will start third due to a grid penalty for Lando Norris.

The British driver has identified a ‘serious issue’ with his car, citing a consistent straight-line speed deficit. This problem has resulted in a loss of between two and six tenths of a second on the straights.

The issue was also present at the British Grand Prix earlier this season. Mercedes initially investigated the brakes and Russell’s driving style as potential causes.

However, the team is now confident that the problem is car-related and not attributable to Russell’s driving. This ongoing technical challenge has impacted Russell’s ability to consistently perform at the front.

His teammate, Kimi Antonelli, in his second season with Mercedes, has demonstrated stronger pace. Antonelli has secured six pole positions this season and leads the drivers’ championship. He also achieved his maiden Grand Prix victory at the 2026 Chinese Grand Prix.

Mercedes has shown overall dominance in the 2026 season, securing seven wins and nine pole positions as of the British Grand Prix. Despite this, the team has faced reliability and operational challenges.

Russell experienced a retirement at the Canadian Grand Prix due to a battery failure while leading the race. A pit crew error during the Monaco Grand Prix also led to a drive-through penalty, costing him a potential podium finish.

Van der Garde, who competed in Formula 1 with Caterham in 2013, now provides analysis for Viaplay. His remarks suggest a focus on driver resilience despite technical setbacks.
