Ferrari concluded qualifying for the Dutch Grand Prix with Charles Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton securing fifth and sixth positions respectively. Telemetry data has revealed the specific areas where the Scuderia’s SF-26 car lost crucial time on Saturday, preventing a stronger grid placement.

The deficit to competitors McLaren and Mercedes became evident immediately after Turn 3 at Circuit Zandvoort. Analysis shows Ferrari’s speed disadvantage through Turn 6 and along the short straight between Turn 7 and Turn 8.

Lando Norris, who secured pole position with a 1:09.521, gained nearly half a second on Hamilton in the middle sector alone. Hamilton’s qualifying lap of 1:09.830 placed him 0.309 seconds off pole, while Leclerc’s 1:09.925 was 0.404 seconds adrift.

Ferrari demonstrated strength in the low-speed corners, particularly Turn 11 and Turn 12. Both drivers managed to reduce the substantial gap accumulated in Sector 2 within these sections of the track.

However, a noticeable lack of power unit performance was observed at the very end of the lap. Speed trap data across the finish line highlighted a significant deficit for Ferrari compared to McLaren and Mercedes.

Charles Leclerc reported power unit issues during Q3, which likely stemmed from setup adjustments made after Q2. The power unit delivered inconsistent power, with either too little or too much torque in various track sections.

This intermittent power delivery was later traced to a software mapping anomaly. The issue caused inconsistent torque output between 8,000 and 10,000 RPM, particularly impacting corner exits for Leclerc. This specific problem was not present in Q1 or Q2.

Hamilton capitalized on Leclerc’s difficulties, gaining approximately 0.25 seconds in the section between Turn 9 and Turn 12. Telemetry showed a notable difference in apex speeds through Turn 10 and Turn 12 between the two Ferrari drivers.

Fred Vasseur, Ferrari Team Principal, expressed disappointment with the qualifying outcome. He acknowledged the gap to McLaren and Mercedes was larger than anticipated, particularly in the middle sector, and emphasized the need for further data analysis.

Lewis Hamilton described Ferrari’s performance characteristic as ‘strange,’ noting the car’s proficiency in low-speed corners contrasted with its struggle to maintain speed through faster sections after Turn 3. He mentioned the car felt ‘nervous’ under power application.

The 2026 Formula 1 regulations, with their emphasis on higher electrical component contribution and complex energy management, can lead to more pronounced mapping issues if calibration is not precise. This complexity contributed to Leclerc’s Q3 problems.

Despite the qualifying setback, Leclerc displayed strong pace during the Sprint race. He demonstrated superior tyre degradation on soft tyres, maintaining consistent performance for 15 laps, unlike Russell on mediums who showed a drop-off after lap 12.

Leclerc’s fastest lap in the Sprint was 1:12.876, marginally quicker than Russell’s 1:13.012. This sprint performance suggests the SF-26 possesses underlying race pace, provided the power unit inconsistencies are resolved.

Ferrari’s consistent strong performance in Friday’s sole practice session during Sprint weekends this season often precedes a decline in pace development through subsequent sessions. This pattern frequently leads to suboptimal qualifying results.

Starting the main race from the third row, Ferrari’s prospects for a podium finish will rely heavily on strategic variations or potential rain, a common factor at the Dutch Grand Prix.
