McLaren Team Principal Andrea Stella has affirmed the continued harmony between Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri, despite their recent on-track battle at the Hungarian Grand Prix. Stella expressed satisfaction with the respectful dynamic, which persisted even after Piastri’s frustration during the race.
Norris secured his first victory of the 2026 Formula 1 season at the Hungaroring on July 26, starting from pole position. He initially lost the lead to Piastri at Turn 2, who demonstrated strong pace in the opening stint.
Piastri’s race was compromised by an early pit stop, intended to counter Lewis Hamilton’s Ferrari, which left him in traffic. He later made contact with Carlos Sainz’s Williams while being delayed by a backmarker, leading to a radio outburst regarding team strategy.
Norris pitted six laps later than Piastri and rejoined ahead, ultimately controlling the race to win by 15 seconds over Max Verstappen. Piastri was forced to retire with a suspected gearbox issue.
Stella confirmed Piastri apologised for his comments, clarifying they were made in the heat of the moment. He highlighted the clean and fair competition between the drivers, emphasizing their mutual respect.
The team principal reiterated McLaren’s commitment to their ‘papaya rules’ approach for 2026, ensuring equal opportunities for both drivers. This strategy aims to foster a collaborative environment despite internal competition.
McLaren’s 2026 season has presented challenges under the new regulations, with the team not matching its form from recent years. Development delays, tyre management issues, and understanding the new power unit have contributed to a difficult start.
The MCL40 has struggled with a narrow performance window and tyre temperature control, particularly at the front. McLaren also faced a knowledge gap regarding their Mercedes power unit early in the season.
Norris, the reigning World Drivers’ Champion from 2025, currently sits fifth in the 2026 standings with 128 points. Piastri is seventh with 92 points.
Mercedes leads the Constructors’ Championship with 379 points, followed by Ferrari with 307 points. McLaren holds third place with 220 points.
Kimi Antonelli, driving for Mercedes, leads the Drivers’ Championship with 219 points, a 50-point advantage over Lewis Hamilton. Antonelli has secured six victories this season, including his maiden win in China.
The Italian teenager became the youngest polesitter and Grand Prix winner in Formula 1 history this year. George Russell is nine points behind Hamilton in the standings.
Despite the current championship deficit, Stella remains optimistic about McLaren’s potential for the remainder of the season. He emphasized the need for continued aggressive development to outpace rivals.
The Formula 1 season is currently on its summer break, with 12 races and 546 points still available. The next event is the Dutch Grand Prix, scheduled for August 23.
