Günther Steiner has commented on Mercedes Team Principal Toto Wolff’s remarks following Andrea Kimi Antonelli’s maiden Formula 1 victory. Steiner labelled Wolff’s post-race radio message to Antonelli as ‘total self-promotion’.
Antonelli, a Mercedes F1 driver since 2025, has achieved significant success in the 2026 season. He has secured five Grand Prix wins, including the Chinese and Monaco Grands Prix, and currently leads the Drivers’ Championship.
After Antonelli’s win in China, Wolff transmitted a message over team radio. He stated, “‘He’s too young. We shouldn’t put him in a Mercedes. Put him in a smaller team. He needs the experience. Look at the mistakes he makes.’ Here we go, Kimi. Victory.”
Steiner interpreted Wolff’s remarks as an attempt to justify his decision to promote Antonelli. He suggested Wolff has a ‘complex’ and was focused on proving his critics wrong regarding the young Italian’s rapid ascent.
The former Haas team principal also linked Antonelli’s rise to Wolff’s past. Steiner believes Wolff views Antonelli as ‘revenge’ for not securing Max Verstappen for Mercedes years ago, seeing him as ‘the next superstar’.
Despite this perceived personal investment, Steiner maintains that Wolff treats both Antonelli and teammate George Russell equally. He stated that Wolff is ‘above that, to favour one or the other’ for the team’s success.
Russell, also a Mercedes junior programme graduate, is Antonelli’s teammate for the 2026 season. He has also achieved race wins and podiums, contributing to Mercedes’ constructor efforts.
Steiner, now a prominent F1 pundit, is known for his direct and candid assessments of paddock affairs. His commentary often provides an unfiltered perspective on team management and driver dynamics.
Wolff has consistently expressed strong belief in Antonelli’s long-term potential. He defended Antonelli after incidents in 2025, stating his ‘100% belief’ in the driver despite early mistakes.
