Max Verstappen secured pole position for the 2026 Singapore Grand Prix sprint race. He posted a fastest lap time of 1:31.156 at the Marina Bay Street Circuit. This marks his first pole position in any qualifying format at Singapore.

George Russell qualified second for Mercedes, 0.120 seconds behind Verstappen. Charles Leclerc completed the top three for Ferrari, 0.243 seconds adrift. The session highlighted the tight competition at the demanding street circuit.

Verstappen had faced an investigation for a yellow flag infringement in SQ1. He was alleged to have passed Lewis Hamilton under yellow flag conditions. However, FIA stewards cleared him of any penalty.

The stewards determined Verstappen reacted appropriately by lifting off throttle and reducing speed. They concluded the overtake was an ‘unfortunate consequence of the significant closing speed differential’. This allowed him to retain pole position.

Verstappen commented on the session, stating, ‘It is always close here in Singapore.’ He added that the car ‘really came more to life’ on the soft tyres during his decisive flying lap. He pushed hard, often close to the wall.

The Dutchman also noted the circuit’s challenges. ‘This track still highlights a few little weaknesses in the car,’ Verstappen mentioned. He expressed satisfaction with how the team managed these issues.

Regarding the physical demands, Verstappen described the cockpit heat as ‘much like a sauna where you do exercises.’ He acknowledged the constant heat but added that drivers ‘like it as well’.

The full sprint qualifying results saw Oscar Piastri (McLaren) in fourth, followed by Lando Norris (McLaren) in fifth. Lewis Hamilton (Ferrari) secured sixth position.

Kimi Antonelli (Mercedes) qualified seventh, with Liam Lawson (Racing Bulls) in eighth. Isack Hadjar (Red Bull) and Pierre Gasly (Alpine) had their lap times deleted for exceeding track limits in SQ3.

The 2026 Singapore Grand Prix weekend runs from October 9-11. Friday featured Free Practice 1 and Sprint Qualifying. Saturday will include the Sprint Race and Grand Prix Qualifying.

This event marks the final sprint weekend of the 2026 Formula 1 season. The main Grand Prix is scheduled for Sunday, October 11.

Red Bull’s RB22 chassis has shown improved performance this season, including a recent win in Malaysia. However, Singapore’s unique characteristics were expected to present a more difficult challenge.

The Marina Bay Street Circuit is a 4.927 km, 19-corner anti-clockwise track. It is known for its high humidity, close barriers, and bumpy surface.

Engineers focused on ride height and suspension settings to manage the circuit’s demanding nature. The track requires maximum downforce and presents challenges with braking stability.

Tyre degradation is typically high due to the abrasive surface and numerous traction zones. The circuit’s limited run-off areas mean minimal margin for driver error.

The FIA introduced a ‘heat hazard’ declaration for 2025, with drivers required to use cooling vests in 2026 if declared. This addresses the extreme physical demands of the Singapore event.
