Andrea Kimi Antonelli secured his eighth victory of the 2026 Formula 1 season at the Spanish Grand Prix in Madrid. The Mercedes driver extended his lead in the Drivers’ Championship following a strategic race at the new Madring circuit.
Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff praised Antonelli’s composure but noted a tendency to be ‘an inch too cool.’ Wolff’s comments followed Antonelli’s incident late in the race where he brushed a wall.
The 20-year-old Italian communicated the contact over team radio, prompting Wolff’s observation. Wolff suggested this ‘coolness’ might contribute to Antonelli maintaining focus during high-pressure moments.
The Spanish Grand Prix, held at the new Madring circuit, presented teams and drivers with challenging conditions. A lack of historical data and a new track surface meant tyre and strategy decisions were made with limited information.
Lando Norris, driving for McLaren, had initially secured pole position for the event, outpacing Antonelli by a mere 0.011 seconds in qualifying. This marked Norris’s third pole of the current season.
However, Norris’s race prospects were significantly impacted by the timing of a Virtual Safety Car deployment. McLaren’s subsequent pit stop under these conditions proved costly, dropping him down the order.
Norris ultimately recovered to finish third, behind Max Verstappen. McLaren also received a €900 fine for Norris exceeding the pit lane speed limit during qualifying.
Antonelli’s victory in Madrid further solidified his position at the top of the standings, now holding an 81-point advantage over his Mercedes teammate George Russell.
Wolff has previously lauded Antonelli’s rapid development, comparing him to an ‘AI agent’ after his remarkable win at the Italian Grand Prix earlier this month. Antonelli started that race from 19th on the grid.
Antonelli debuted in Formula 1 with Mercedes in 2025, replacing Lewis Hamilton. He has since achieved eight Grand Prix wins, six pole positions, and fifteen podium finishes.
He became the youngest driver to secure a pole position in China and the youngest to lead the World Drivers’ Championship in Japan during the current season.
Mercedes has demonstrated strong performance throughout the 2026 season, currently leading the Constructors’ Championship by 145 points ahead of Ferrari.
Antonelli is contracted to remain with the Mercedes-AMG Petronas F1 Team until at least the end of the 2027 season.
