Kimi Antonelli secured victory at the 2026 Spanish Grand Prix held at the new Circuito de Madring. Max Verstappen finished second, with Lando Norris completing the podium in third. Norris, who started from pole position, saw a potential win slip away due to an ill-timed Virtual Safety Car (VSC) period.

Antonelli’s win marked his eighth victory of the current Formula 1 season, significantly extending his lead in the Drivers’ Championship. The Mercedes driver benefited from the VSC, which allowed him to make a pit stop without losing track position.

Norris had established a lead of over six seconds from pole position before the VSC was deployed following Lance Stroll’s retirement. The McLaren driver had already passed the pit lane entry when the VSC was triggered, forcing him to wait until the next lap for his stop.

A slow pit stop further compounded Norris’s issues, dropping him to fifth place. Despite recovering to third, Norris expressed frustration with the VSC rules, which he deemed unfair.

Max Verstappen navigated a chaotic opening lap to secure second place for Red Bull. The Dutchman was involved in an incident with Lewis Hamilton, cutting a chicane and being instructed to return positions.

Verstappen voiced his displeasure over team radio regarding the requirement to relinquish positions. Red Bull’s RB22 car is powered by a Ford-branded power unit for the 2026 season.

The Madring circuit, a hybrid track combining public roads and purpose-built sections around the IFEMA Exhibition Centre, hosted its inaugural Formula 1 race. The 5.414 km circuit features 22 corners and a unique 550-meter banked Turn 12, known as ‘La Monumental’, with a 24% gradient.
