The Nürburgring circuit is not featured on the official 2026 FIA Formula One World Championship calendar. The schedule, announced in June 2025, comprises 24 rounds, commencing in Australia and concluding in Abu Dhabi.
Despite the circuit’s absence from the F1 calendar, the rivalry between Max Verstappen and Lewis Hamilton continues to be a central narrative in the 2026 season. Hamilton, driving for Ferrari, has experienced a significant resurgence this year.
The seven-time world champion has secured five podium finishes and claimed his first victory for Ferrari in Barcelona. He currently holds third position in the drivers’ championship standings.
Conversely, Max Verstappen’s 2026 season with Red Bull has been challenging. The four-time world champion has faced persistent mechanical failures and a notable lack of pace from his RB22 car.
Verstappen’s performance issues have led to speculation regarding his future at Red Bull. He is currently outside the top two in the drivers’ standings, a position that could activate a performance-related exit clause in his contract.
The two drivers previously competed at the Nürburgring in an F1 context during the 2020 Eifel Grand Prix. That event marked a significant moment in Hamilton’s career.
Hamilton secured his 91st F1 victory at the Nürburgring, equalling Michael Schumacher’s record. Verstappen finished second in that race, also setting the fastest lap.
Outside of Formula 1, Verstappen has maintained a presence at the Nürburgring. In May 2025, he confirmed breaking the GT3 lap record on the Nordschleife during an Endurance Series test.
Earlier this year, in April 2026, Verstappen participated in another Nürburgring Endurance Championship (NLS) race. He initially won the event but was later disqualified due to exceeding maximum tyre usage.
The ongoing F1 season sees Hamilton leading Ferrari’s title charge, while Verstappen navigates a difficult campaign with Red Bull, highlighting their contrasting fortunes.
