George Russell’s pursuit of victory at the 2026 Italian Grand Prix was significantly impacted by Sergio Perez’s actions under a Virtual Safety Car period. Russell finished second to Mercedes teammate Kimi Antonelli at Monza on Sunday, September 6, 2026. Antonelli secured the win by 3.857 seconds over the Briton.

Sky F1 pundit Nico Rosberg suggested that Perez, rather than Mercedes’ split strategy, might have cost Russell the win. Russell himself indicated this in the cooldown room after the race. He stated, ‘I had Perez come out of the pits in front of me, and it was plus four seconds on the delta.’

This four-second deficit matched Russell’s gap to Antonelli at the chequered flag. Perez, driving for Cadillac, emerged from the pits a lap down during the VSC. He struggled to maintain the required VSC pace, causing Russell to lose critical time.

The Virtual Safety Car was deployed on Lap 28 after Lance Stroll’s Aston Martin stopped on track. This incident proved pivotal for the race outcome.

Mercedes opted for a split strategy during this period. Antonelli, who had started 19th due to a power unit penalty, pitted for a fresh set of medium tyres. Russell, however, remained on track with his hard tyres, which had already completed 25 laps.

Antonelli’s charge from the back of the grid was notable, marking his seventh victory of the season. He became the first Italian to win his home Grand Prix since Ludovico Scarfiotti in 1966.

Mercedes Team Principal Toto Wolff later commented on the strategy, stating there was ‘no chance’ to alter Russell’s tyre plan. Wolff admitted the two-stop strategy, which Antonelli executed, ultimately proved to be the best.

Russell expressed frustration with the VSC timing and admitted he was ‘surprised’ by the team’s decision to split strategies. He completed 50 laps on his hard tyres.

Antonelli eventually overtook Russell on Lap 50 of 53, capitalising on his fresher tyres. The Mercedes 1-2 finish was secured, with Max Verstappen completing the podium in third place for Red Bull.

Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri finished fourth and fifth for McLaren, respectively. Lewis Hamilton secured sixth place for Ferrari after a challenging race, which saw teammate Charles Leclerc crash out on Lap 2, causing an early red flag.

Following the Italian Grand Prix, Kimi Antonelli extended his lead in the Drivers’ Championship to 66 points over George Russell. Antonelli now holds 267 points, while Russell has 201.

Sergio Perez finished the race in 18th position for Cadillac. He had also received a reprimand from the FIA stewards before the race for re-crossing the white line on the pit exit road.
