Ralf Schumacher has offered his assessment of Red Bull Racing’s 2026 Formula 1 season, highlighting the team’s ongoing challenges despite Max Verstappen securing a recent victory. Schumacher’s comments underscore a complex period for the reigning champions.

The former Formula 1 driver has repeatedly expressed concerns regarding Verstappen’s future at the team. He suggested that ‘something has broken’ in the relationship between the driver and Red Bull.

Red Bull has faced a difficult 2026 campaign, currently holding fourth position in the World Championship standings after fifteen races. The team has yet to consistently challenge for victories this season.

Verstappen himself has been vocal about his dissatisfaction with the new 2026 regulations and the performance of the RB22 chassis. He noted the car was ‘particularly bad’ at the season’s outset.

Despite these struggles, Verstappen recently achieved Red Bull’s first win of the season at the Bahrain Grand Prix, held in Malaysia. This marked a significant moment for the team and driver.

Laurent Mekies, Red Bull’s Team Principal, indicated that the team did not anticipate such a substantial step forward in Malaysia. The victory was a welcome, if somewhat unexpected, development.

Red Bull introduced its final major upgrade package for the season at the Azerbaijan Grand Prix. This development aimed to improve performance, though Verstappen acknowledged ongoing challenges.

The Baku upgrade, which included a new floor body and diffuser, contributed to the car’s improved pace. However, Verstappen still emphasized the need for more substantial improvements for the upcoming season.

Schumacher’s earlier remarks in August 2026 pointed to Verstappen facing a difficult decision about his long-term commitment. Performance clauses in his contract could allow an early departure.

The ongoing discussions about Verstappen’s future have reportedly become exhausting for the team. Schumacher questioned whether Verstappen has lost confidence in Red Bull’s ability to turn things around.

Red Bull has undergone significant internal changes, including the departure of Christian Horner in July 2025 and a reduced role for Helmut Marko after the 2025 season.

The team also implemented organizational changes in April 2026 to strengthen its technical leadership. This included Ben Waterhouse taking an expanded role as Chief Performance and Design Engineer.

Furthermore, Red Bull is developing its own power unit for the 2026 regulations, a substantial undertaking. Helmut Marko previously acknowledged the inherent risks associated with this project.
