George Russell is currently contending with significant handling and reliability issues in his Mercedes W17 during the 2026 Formula 1 season. The car is reportedly lacking rear stability, a characteristic Russell notes makes it more challenging to drive and contributes to increased driver errors.

This situation draws parallels to difficulties previously experienced by Lewis Hamilton with earlier Mercedes chassis, specifically the W13 and W14. Hamilton had highlighted issues with porpoising, overall balance, and a front-biased cockpit position that made those cars unpredictable.

Russell has faced a series of mechanical setbacks this season. These include battery failures in Canada, harvesting and deployment problems in Japan and Belgium, and a gear issue during qualifying in China.

An anti-stall incident at the Hungarian Grand Prix further hampered his performance, causing him to drop to 21st on the opening lap before recovering to seventh.

Mercedes Deputy Team Principal Bradley Lord has indicated that grid penalties are ‘almost inevitable’ for both Russell and teammate Kimi Antonelli in the latter half of the season due to the rate of component usage.

Team Principal Toto Wolff acknowledged Russell’s performance deficit to Antonelli, particularly on straights, stating that some of the issues are ‘not his fault.’ Wolff admitted the team is investigating the unexplained losses.

Russell recently confirmed that Mercedes has identified and resolved an engine problem related to electrical energy deployment. This issue had affected his performance in recent races, including the Austrian, Silverstone, and Belgian Grands Prix.

Despite these challenges, Mercedes began the 2026 season strongly with the W17, securing one-two finishes in two of the first three races. The Mercedes power unit is considered the strongest on the grid.

Kimi Antonelli has emerged as a dominant force, leading the Drivers’ Championship with six victories this season. Russell, by contrast, sits third, 59 points behind his teammate.

Lando Norris of McLaren commented on Russell’s struggles, emphasizing the necessity for drivers to adapt to varying car characteristics.

The car isn’t feeling as nice to drive at the moment as it once did, lacking rear stability, whereas at the start of the year it was much better. I think Kimi [Antonelli] and I are collectively making more mistakes because the car is more challenging to drive.

Russell described his fifth-place finish at the Belgian Grand Prix as his ‘worst performance of the season.’ He had previously admitted to being ‘bamboozled’ by his drop in pace earlier in the campaign.
