George Russell finished seventh at the Hungarian Grand Prix, marking a significant setback for his 2026 Formula 1 title prospects. The Mercedes driver had started the race from pole position at the Hungaroring.

Max Verstappen secured victory in Hungary, further extending his lead in the Drivers’ Championship. Russell’s seventh-place finish meant he fell further behind the championship leaders.

Following the Hungarian Grand Prix, Verstappen leads the 2026 Drivers’ Championship with 245 points. Charles Leclerc holds second with 210 points, while Russell now sits third with 198 points.

The gap between Russell and Verstappen has now widened to 47 points. This makes the path to the 2026 title increasingly challenging for the British driver, with eight races remaining in the current season.

The Mercedes W17 demonstrated strong qualifying pace throughout the weekend. However, the car’s race performance proved insufficient to challenge the Red Bulls and Ferraris on Sunday.

Tyre degradation emerged as a critical issue for Mercedes during the race, particularly with the medium and hard compound tyres in the hot conditions. This significantly impacted Russell’s potential for a podium finish.

Mercedes technical director James Allison stated the team needs to analyze the W17’s race performance. The focus is on understanding its handling of specific tyre compounds and improving consistency.

Race strategy calls for Russell were also questioned by some analysts. Suggestions included that an earlier pit stop might have mitigated the severe tyre wear issues experienced.

Russell expressed his frustration after the race, stating, ‘We had the pace on Saturday, but Sunday was a different story. It’s tough to swallow when you start from pole and finish P7. We need to understand why our race pace dropped off so dramatically.’

He further added, ‘The championship is still long, but these weekends hurt. We can’t afford many more like this if we want to fight for the title.’
