George Russell claimed pole position for the Azerbaijan Grand Prix, recording a 1:42.526 lap time at the Baku City Circuit. His performance delivered the largest qualifying margin of the 2026 Formula 1 season. Russell outpaced Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc by 0.837 seconds.

This marks Russell’s fifth pole position of the current season and his 12th career pole. It is his first pole since the Austrian Grand Prix in June. The Mercedes driver topped two of the three practice sessions and led every segment of qualifying.

Mercedes teammate and championship leader Kimi Antonelli will start Saturday’s race from 16th position. Antonelli crashed in Q1 at Turn 1, damaging his front-left suspension. His initial lap time was sufficient for Q2, but he could not continue the session.

Antonelli currently holds an 81-point lead over Russell in the drivers’ championship. The 20-year-old Italian has had a notable season, becoming the youngest pole-sitter at the Chinese Grand Prix and the youngest driver to lead the F1 standings.

He has secured six victories this season, including wins in China, Japan, Miami, Canada, Monaco, and Belgium. Antonelli also won the Italian Grand Prix this month, starting from 19th on the grid.

Charles Leclerc qualified second for Ferrari with a time of 1:43.363. He secured a front-row start despite the SF-26 car’s persistent limitations in tyre management, handling, and hybrid deployment.

Leclerc benefited from a slipstream provided by his teammate Lewis Hamilton during qualifying. Ferrari team principal Fred Vasseur expressed satisfaction with the team’s progress between practice and qualifying sessions.

Oscar Piastri secured third place for McLaren, just 0.001 seconds behind Leclerc, with a time of 1:43.364. Red Bull’s Isack Hadjar qualified fourth, marking his return after missing three races due to a wrist injury.

Lando Norris, Piastri’s McLaren teammate, qualified fifth after a lock-up on his final lap prevented him from improving his time. Lewis Hamilton finished sixth for Ferrari.

Pierre Gasly placed seventh for Alpine, ahead of Max Verstappen in eighth. Verstappen reported a consistent power deficit during qualifying and encountered yellow flags from Norris’s off-track excursion.

Carlos Sainz achieved ninth position for Williams, marking his and the team’s first Q3 appearance of the season. Franco Colapinto rounded out the top ten for Alpine.

The full qualifying results for the 2026 Azerbaijan Grand Prix are as follows:

1. George Russell (Mercedes) 1:42.526
2. Charles Leclerc (Ferrari) +0.837s
3. Oscar Piastri (McLaren) +0.838s
4. Isack Hadjar (Red Bull) +0.974s
5. Lando Norris (McLaren) +1.146s
6. Lewis Hamilton (Ferrari) +1.332s
7. Pierre Gasly (Alpine) +1.521s
8. Max Verstappen (Red Bull) +1.555s
9. Carlos Sainz (Williams) +2.040s
10. Franco Colapinto (Alpine) +2.437s

Ollie Bearman (Haas) qualified 11th, followed by Liam Lawson (Racing Bulls) in 12th. Alexander Albon (Williams) secured 13th, with Esteban Ocon (Haas) in 14th. Arvid Lindblad (Racing Bulls) completed the top 15.

‘When I crossed the line I saw the gap, I was shocked. I knew the lap was great, I had a nice slipstream at the end which gave me an extra probably tenth and a half, two tenths and it just all perfectly came together,’ Russell stated.

Mercedes’ technical director James Allison previously noted that the team exhausted development resources early in the season to achieve an initial 0.5-second lap-time advantage with the W17. The Baku street circuit is known to favor Mercedes’ engine and car design.
