George Russell is currently facing an uncomfortable comparison to Valtteri Bottas, with former Formula 1 driver Ralf Schumacher labelling him as the ‘number two’ at Mercedes. This assessment comes as teammate Kimi Antonelli has established a significant lead in the 2026 Drivers’ Championship.
Schumacher, speaking on the Backstage Boxengasse podcast, drew parallels to Bottas’s tenure alongside Lewis Hamilton. He suggested Russell must hope the 2027 Mercedes car aligns better with his driving style to regain momentum.
The current 2026 season sees Russell paired with Antonelli, who has delivered a dominant performance. Antonelli leads the championship standings by 81 points over Russell after 14 races.
Antonelli has secured eight Grand Prix victories this season, while Russell has achieved two wins. Russell has publicly conceded that his aspirations for the 2026 drivers’ title are now realistically over.
Schumacher indicated that Antonelli’s strong form means the Italian driver is now significantly influencing the direction of Mercedes’ car development. This places Russell in a challenging position within the team.
Former Haas team principal Guenther Steiner echoed similar sentiments regarding Russell’s situation. Steiner noted that Russell was expected to lead the team after Lewis Hamilton’s departure to Ferrari in 2025.
However, Antonelli has proven to be the more impressive competitor in their second year as teammates. Steiner suggested that if Russell is dissatisfied with a secondary role, he might need to explore options for a lead driver position elsewhere.
Russell signed a new multi-year contract with Mercedes in October 2025, which includes performance clauses for the 2027 season. He has expressed confidence in meeting these contractual metrics.
Despite the current performance gap, Schumacher believes Russell still possesses the speed to win races. He highlighted that even ‘number two’ drivers can secure victories when circumstances favour them.
‘There are many drivers who remain number two for a very long time, look for example at Bottas next to Hamilton, who are simply there and can still win races when something happens,’ Schumacher explained.
Russell’s focus for the remainder of the 2026 season is now on maximising individual race results rather than the championship fight.
