Red Bull Racing technical director Pierre Waché is reportedly under significant pressure amidst the team’s challenging 2026 Formula 1 season. Sports writer Matt Majendie, in his recent book ‘Inside Red Bull Racing: A season with F1’s most thrilling team’, described Waché as one of the most stressed individuals he has encountered within the sport.
The intensity of Waché’s role was highlighted by an incident at Imola, where Max Verstappen, after securing pole position, reportedly told his technical director to ‘Chill out, Pierre’ over team radio. This interaction underscores the high-stakes environment within the Milton Keynes outfit.
Waché himself has acknowledged the inherent pressures of his position. He stated that he does not rely on external criticism, as his own self-assessment and that of his family provide sufficient scrutiny.
The technical director’s position is currently under increased scrutiny due to the performance of the RB22 chassis. Red Bull is currently fourth in the 2026 Constructors’ Championship, a notable decline from previous seasons.
Max Verstappen, the team’s lead driver, is positioned seventh in the Drivers’ standings, trailing the championship leader Kimi Antonelli by over 100 points. The RB22 has been plagued by issues including three retirements, persistent power unit problems, and excessive tyre degradation.
Verstappen has openly described the RB22 as ‘incredibly tough to drive,’ indicating a fundamental struggle with the car’s characteristics. This performance deficit has fueled speculation regarding Verstappen’s long-term future with the team, with reports suggesting potential exit clauses in his contract.
Despite these challenges, Waché maintains that Verstappen retains faith in Red Bull’s capacity to develop a competitive car. The team is also undergoing significant leadership changes, with Laurent Mekies having taken over as Team Principal and CEO on July 9, 2025, following Christian Horner’s departure.
In other team personnel news, Greg Reeson, Max Verstappen’s dedicated tyre technician, has been given the nickname ‘tyre whisperer’ by team insiders. Reeson has worked closely with Verstappen for a decade, managing the intricate details of tyre preparation and strategy.
Reeson has previously expressed frustration with media portrayals of Verstappen, emphasizing that the driver’s public image often differs from his personality within the team. He described Verstappen as ‘a killer in the car, but one of the nicest people I know outside of it.’
It is important to note that Adrian Newey, the renowned car designer, departed Red Bull in 2024. He subsequently joined Aston Martin in 2025 and assumed the role of Team Principal there in 2026. Newey recently drove the RB17 hypercar at the Goodwood Festival of Speed in July 2026, a project he conceived during his tenure at Red Bull.
