The Formula 1 paddock prepares for the Belgian Grand Prix this weekend, with Red Bull Racing and Max Verstappen under considerable scrutiny. The tenth round of the 2026 season, held at Spa-Francorchamps from July 17-19, marks the beginning of a crucial double-header before the summer break.
Verstappen, a four-time world champion, currently sits P7 in the Drivers’ Championship with 76 points after nine rounds. He has yet to secure a victory this season, recording only two podium finishes.
The RB22 chassis has presented significant challenges for the Milton Keynes-based team. Drivers have reported a lack of consistent and predictable handling, alongside persistent issues with understeer and oversteer.
Rear-end stability remains a concern, particularly in high-speed corners, making the car difficult to manage. Furthermore, the RB22 is reportedly overweight, contributing to a performance deficit of approximately 0.2 seconds per lap.
Reliability has also plagued Red Bull’s campaign. Verstappen recently experienced consecutive rear wing failures, first in qualifying at the Austrian Grand Prix and then during the British Grand Prix race.
Following his retirement at Silverstone, Verstappen described the rotating rear wing as ‘super dangerous’. He expressed a need for a ‘few days to reset’ given the team’s difficult season.
‘It would be a very zen person to be optimistic at the moment, given what happened again this weekend,’ Verstappen stated. ‘I need a few days, I think, to reset and try again.’
The Red Bull Ford power unit, while exceeding initial expectations, has also shown reliability concerns. This necessitates a split development focus between the power unit and chassis.
The wider championship battle sees Mercedes leading the Constructors’ standings with 333 points, ahead of Ferrari on 255 and McLaren with 179. Red Bull currently holds P4 with 128 points.
Andrea Kimi Antonelli leads the Drivers’ Championship by 25 points over George Russell, with Lewis Hamilton seven points further back in third. Charles Leclerc has secured two wins for Ferrari in the last three races.
The Circuit de Spa-Francorchamps, known for its unpredictable weather, currently has rain forecast for all three days of track action. This could introduce an additional variable to the challenging weekend.
Speculation regarding an exit clause in Verstappen’s contract continues, with reports suggesting it could be activated if he falls outside the top two in the standings after the summer break.
