Former Formula 1 driver Ralf Schumacher has recently challenged Lando Norris to consistently demonstrate the performance level required to compete with Max Verstappen. Schumacher’s remarks come amidst a season where Norris, the reigning 2025 World Champion, has faced varying fortunes with McLaren.

Norris believes his driving has improved during the 2026 season, despite McLaren not consistently contending for victories. The British driver acknowledged ahead of the Singapore Grand Prix that he has become more adept at extracting performance from his car.

McLaren has struggled to maintain its front-running position following the 2026 regulation changes. The team currently sits third in the Constructors’ Championship, trailing leaders Mercedes by 159 points.

Norris, who secured a Sprint victory in Miami and Grand Prix wins in Hungary and Zandvoort, is currently fifth in the Drivers’ Championship standings. He is 132 points behind championship leader Kimi Antonelli.

Conversely, Max Verstappen, a four-time World Champion, has experienced a resurgence in form. After a challenging start to the 2026 season, Verstappen recently secured back-to-back victories in Malaysia and Singapore.

Verstappen is currently fourth in the 2026 Drivers’ Championship with 221 points after 17 rounds, having achieved two wins and nine podium finishes.

Schumacher previously suggested in August 2026 that Verstappen might consider a move to McLaren. This was based on the premise that Norris could win with the McLaren car, implying Verstappen believed he could perform even better.

This perspective forms the basis of Schumacher’s current challenge to Norris: if the McLaren is a winning car, Norris must consistently demonstrate that capability on track. Schumacher has also been critical of Norris’s driving in the past, including a near-miss incident at the Bahrain Grand Prix earlier this season, which he described as ’embarrassing.’

Earlier in the 2026 season, Schumacher also contrasted Verstappen’s public criticism of the new technical regulations with his brother Michael Schumacher’s approach of always supporting his team. Verstappen had likened the 2026 cars to ‘Formula E on steroids.’

The 2026 Formula 1 season continues with Kimi Antonelli leading the Drivers’ Championship, holding a 102-point advantage over George Russell.
