Former Formula 1 driver and pundit Ralf Schumacher has raised questions regarding Max Verstappen’s current situation at Red Bull Racing. Schumacher suggests a fundamental shift has occurred within the relationship between the four-time world champion and his team during the 2026 season.
Verstappen has openly expressed dissatisfaction with the new regulations introduced for the current season. He has also voiced concerns about the performance of the Red Bull car, which he described as ‘particularly bad’ earlier in the year.
Schumacher believes these public statements and the team’s challenging start to the 2026 campaign indicate a deeper issue. He stated that ‘something has broken’ between Verstappen and the Austrian outfit.
The Dutchman’s contract with Red Bull extends until 2028. However, speculation persists regarding potential exit clauses linked to performance, which could allow an earlier departure.
Ralf Schumacher also drew a comparison between Max Verstappen’s approach and that of his brother, Michael Schumacher. He noted that Michael would have handled team struggles and public criticism of regulations differently.
According to Schumacher, Michael Schumacher consistently stood by his team and refrained from public criticism, preferring to address issues behind closed doors. This contrasts with Max Verstappen’s more outspoken stance.
Further adding to the narrative surrounding Verstappen’s future, Ralf Schumacher previously claimed that Mercedes made a genuine offer to the Red Bull driver. He suggested Verstappen declined the offer, finding it insufficiently ‘attractive’.
The 2026 season has seen Verstappen currently placed sixth in the Drivers’ Championship standings. Mercedes driver Kimi Antonelli leads the championship with 267 points after 13 rounds.
Antonelli secured his seventh victory of the season at the Italian Grand Prix on September 6, 2026, extending his lead over teammate George Russell. Verstappen finished third in that race.
The ongoing discussions about Verstappen’s future and the perceived friction within Red Bull continue to be a significant topic in the paddock as the 2026 season progresses.
