Ralf Schumacher has expressed concern regarding Oscar Piastri’s current situation at McLaren, drawing a comparison to Carlos Sainz’s position. Schumacher’s comments suggest a perceived shift in Piastri’s contentment amid the ongoing 2026 Formula 1 season.
Despite these observations, Piastri holds a long-term contract with McLaren, securing his position with the team until at least the conclusion of the 2028 season. This extension was confirmed in March 2025.
Piastri’s tenure at McLaren has included significant achievements. He contributed to the team’s 2024 Constructors’ Championship victory and secured his first two Grand Prix wins during the 2024 season.
As of the 2026 British Grand Prix, Piastri has accumulated nine race wins, six pole positions, and 28 podium finishes in his Formula 1 career.
However, the 2026 season has presented challenges for McLaren. The team currently sits third in the Constructors’ Championship. Team Principal Andrea Stella noted a performance deficit to Mercedes, estimating it at up to one second per lap after the Australian Grand Prix.
McLaren’s struggles are attributed to both chassis performance and issues with power unit exploitation, despite using Mercedes engines. Guenther Steiner, former Haas Team Principal, has suggested McLaren should develop its own engine.
Piastri himself voiced excitement for the 2026 season and the new technical regulations in January. He acknowledged the significant departure in car philosophy and the need to understand new engines.
Schumacher’s remarks, made in November 2025, were based on paddock rumors concerning Piastri’s trust in the team. He speculated about a potential move to Aston Martin for Piastri.
Carlos Sainz, the driver to whom Piastri is compared, joined Williams for the 2025 season after Lewis Hamilton replaced him at Ferrari. Sainz is contracted with Williams until the end of the 2026 season.
Sainz experienced a strong 2025 season with Williams, securing two podium finishes and helping the team to fifth in the Constructors’ Championship.
The 2026 season has proven difficult for Williams, with an overweight and uncompetitive car hindering their performance. Sainz has publicly affirmed his commitment to Williams’ long-term project.
He stated his priority is to make the Williams project succeed and is not actively considering his future beyond the team until the summer break.
Williams Team Principal James Vowles has expressed his determination to retain Sainz, acknowledging that a race-winning car might not be available until 2028.
