The weather outlook for the upcoming Dutch Grand Prix at Circuit Zandvoort has significantly shifted, with earlier predictions of widespread rain now revised. While the initial forecast suggested a wet weekend, particularly for Friday, the probability of precipitation for Saturday and Sunday has decreased. This development impacts a race weekend already challenging due to its sprint format.

Friday, August 21, is still expected to see light rain showers, especially during the first free practice session, with a 50-60% chance of rain at 12:30 local time. The risk of rain is then projected to diminish as the day progresses, with a 20% chance of showers for Sprint Qualifying at 16:30 local time. Temperatures are anticipated to be around 18°C.

For Saturday, August 22, forecasts indicate possible stormy conditions overnight into the morning, with rain continuing through the early hours. The Sprint race, scheduled for 12:00 local time, carries a 40-50% chance of rain. However, conditions are expected to clear for Grand Prix qualifying later in the afternoon, with only a 10% chance of rainfall at 16:00 local time. Air temperatures will remain cool, around 17-19°C.

The most notable change in the forecast is for Sunday, August 23, the day of the Grand Prix. Early indications now point to a largely clearer day, featuring a mix of cloud and sunny spells. The chance of rain has significantly reduced to little or no probability, suggesting a dry race. Temperatures are expected to be between 18-22°C, accompanied by light breezes.

The Dutch Grand Prix marks Zandvoort’s first-ever Sprint weekend, adding an extra layer of complexity for teams and drivers. The format allows for only one free practice session before Sprint Qualifying, limiting crucial setup time. This compressed schedule demands immediate performance and adaptability, particularly when faced with variable weather conditions.

Circuit Zandvoort’s coastal location near the North Sea inherently brings unpredictable weather, with wind and sand often influencing track grip. The 4.259-kilometre circuit features 14 corners, including two highly banked turns (Turns 3 and 14) with angles steeper than Indianapolis. These banked sections, at 19 and 18 degrees respectively, generate extreme vertical and lateral forces on the tyres.

The track’s asphalt, which has seen multiple resurfacing efforts, combined with sand blown from nearby beaches, contributes to a low grip surface that can change even between sessions. Tyre management is a critical challenge, with the front-left tyre under particular stress due to high lateral loads. Overtaking is generally difficult at Zandvoort, further emphasizing the importance of qualifying performance.

The 2026 season introduces new technical regulations, including new wet and intermediate tyres that have yet to be raced. Zandvoort also features two straight-line-mode zones for 2026, which will remain active in wet conditions but with delayed activation points. This year’s event is being promoted as ‘The Final Lap’, indicating it may be Zandvoort’s last Formula 1 Grand Prix for the foreseeable future.
