Oscar Piastri has indicated his readiness to resume Formula 1 duties following the mandatory summer shutdown. The McLaren driver’s statement aligns with the paddock’s reassembly as the 2026 season prepares to restart. Piastri conveyed a shift from leisure to professional focus as the break concludes.
The Australian spent his summer recess engaging in various activities. These included a ‘classic European summer’ with seaside dinners and exploring on two wheels. He also participated in a photoshoot, modelling pieces from his new OP81 range.
Prior to the official shutdown, Piastri completed a two-day Testing of Previous Cars (TPC) outing at Portimao. Driving the 2023 MCL60, this test allowed him to familiarise himself with a circuit scheduled to return to the F1 calendar in 2027.
McLaren’s 2026 season has delivered mixed results in its first half. Lando Norris secured the team’s first victory of the year at the Hungarian Grand Prix. However, Piastri experienced a gearbox failure in Hungary following contact with Carlos Sainz.
The team’s overall performance has been described as ‘up and down’ and below their desired standard compared to the previous season. Both McLaren cars failed to finish the Chinese Grand Prix earlier this year.
Norris currently holds a 7-4 advantage over Piastri in qualifying comparisons. Their race day head-to-head statistics are level at five finishes apiece.
McLaren is utilising the break to review operational procedures and address reliability concerns. Piastri has stated his objective for the second half of the season is to challenge for race victories again.
The Formula 1 summer break is a mandated 14-day factory shutdown. This period, typically observed from early to mid-August, prevents car development and provides staff a break.
Most teams concluded their compulsory shutdown on August 17. The 2026 Formula 1 season resumes this weekend with the Dutch Grand Prix. Racing at Circuit Zandvoort is scheduled from August 21-23.
