Oscar Piastri described Fernando Alonso as the ‘master of chaos’ following the Bahrain Grand Prix in Malaysia. The comment was made over team radio after Piastri’s race engineer, Tom Stallard, informed him of Alonso’s eighth-place finish.

Alonso’s P8 at the Sepang International Circuit marked his best result of the 2026 Formula 1 season to date. The race itself was characterized by highly unpredictable and chaotic conditions.

The Grand Prix experienced significant delays, initially due to severe weather conditions. A subsequent technical issue affecting multiple cars further complicated the start of the event.

Starting from 12th position, Alonso made an early strategic decision to begin the race on slick tyres. This choice proved to be incorrect in the initial stages of the Grand Prix.

However, a well-timed safety car intervention later in the race effectively regrouped the entire field. This allowed Alonso to recover lost ground and reset his strategy.

Alonso then proceeded to navigate through the order, demonstrating strong pace. He notably claimed to be ‘faster than the Ferraris’ at one point and overtook Lewis Hamilton.

Aston Martin has endured a challenging 2026 season, with the team generally struggling for consistent performance. The eighth-place finish at Sepang was only Alonso’s third points-scoring result this year.

The Adrian Newey-led AMR26, powered by Honda, showed improved competitiveness during the Sepang weekend. The circuit’s layout was identified as particularly suiting the car’s characteristics.

Piastri’s own 2026 season with McLaren has also been marked by difficulties. He crashed on the reconnaissance lap at the Australian Grand Prix, leading to an early retirement.

Further reliability issues prevented Piastri from starting the Chinese Grand Prix. A gearbox failure during the Hungarian Grand Prix also contributed to his challenging year.

Piastri has been actively working to adapt his driving style to the new 2026 technical regulations. These rules demand a different approach to energy management and throttle control.

McLaren, despite securing both titles in the 2025 season, experienced a tricky start to the current campaign. Lando Norris notably secured a Sprint victory in Miami.

Norris also claimed victory at the Hungarian Grand Prix earlier this season. Piastri achieved podium finishes in both Japan and Miami, indicating a recovery in McLaren’s form.

Looking ahead, Alonso has expressed optimism regarding the upcoming Singapore Grand Prix. He believes the street circuit will better flatter the Aston Martin package.

Piastri, meanwhile, has predicted a ‘chaotic’ Italian Grand Prix. This forecast is attributed to the significant energy management challenges presented by the 2026 regulations.
