Oscar Piastri experienced a significant setback during the 2026 Azerbaijan Grand Prix, suffering a double front tyre lock-up into Turn 1. This incident occurred during a crucial race restart, forcing the McLaren driver into the run-off area. The error resulted in Piastri plummeting from a provisional third position to 15th place on the track. He ultimately finished the race in 14th, failing to score points for McLaren.
Piastri described the lock-up as unexpected. He stated, ‘I need to look because it was a bit weird just locking up both fronts instantly like that.’ The Australian driver added, ‘I didn’t think I did anything spectacular.’ He speculated on potential causes, noting, ‘I don’t know if I was on a crown in the road or something, but it certainly was a surprise to me.’
The incident unfolded after a strong start to the race for Piastri. He had qualified third and quickly moved into second position, overtaking Charles Leclerc on the opening lap. Piastri then successfully defended against the Red Bull drivers, Max Verstappen and Isack Hadjar, for a considerable period.
The race saw two Safety Car deployments. The first was triggered by Alex Albon’s crash. Following the initial restart, Verstappen managed to overtake Piastri. A second Safety Car period ensued after a multi-car collision at Turn 1, involving Alpine’s Franco Colapinto, Pierre Gasly, and Piastri’s teammate Lando Norris.
Piastri’s critical lock-up occurred at the restart following this second Safety Car, as he was defending his position from Isack Hadjar. The error effectively ended his hopes of securing a podium finish, which would have been his third of the 2026 season.
McLaren endured a challenging weekend at the Baku City Circuit, leaving the event without any championship points. Team Principal Andrea Stella acknowledged the car’s limitations. Stella noted, ‘We had issues and some mistakes, but at the same time I think we paid [the price for] some fundamental limitations of our package in this kind of circuit.’
Stella further explained that the MCL40 lacked sufficient straight-line speed and cornering pace. This deficiency, he stated, ‘continuously exposed our drivers to being attacked and having to spend the race pretty much watching the mirrors rather than thinking about how they can progress.’ Despite bringing upgrades, the circuit’s characteristics demanded a more substantial performance step.
George Russell secured victory in the Azerbaijan Grand Prix, with Max Verstappen finishing second. Isack Hadjar completed the podium in third place. Piastri’s 14th-place finish marked a disappointing conclusion to a race where he had shown strong potential early on.
