A Dutch NOS Formula 1 analyst has voiced disagreement with Max Verstappen’s conduct during the recent Drivers’ Parade at Silverstone. The analyst specifically referenced Verstappen’s reaction, stating he found it ‘ridiculous’. This criticism follows an incident where Verstappen reportedly showed reluctance to participate in the pre-race event.
The analyst’s comments highlight a perceived lack of enthusiasm from the Red Bull driver during the traditional parade lap. Verstappen’s exact words, as quoted by the analyst, were: ‘man, ridiculous’.
This latest critique adds to a season marked by Verstappen’s outspoken dissatisfaction with the 2026 Formula 1 technical regulations. The four-time world champion has consistently expressed strong reservations about the new car designs and power unit specifications.
Verstappen has previously described the energy management demands of the 2026 cars as ‘not very Formula 1-like’ and ‘anti-racing’. He also controversially likened the racing experience to ‘Formula E on steroids’ and ‘playing Mario Kart’.
He has maintained that his criticisms are not a consequence of Red Bull’s current performance challenges. Verstappen insists he would voice the same concerns even if he were consistently winning races, emphasizing his commitment to the sport’s quality.
His strong opinions have drawn varied reactions from within the paddock. Mercedes driver George Russell has publicly disagreed with Verstappen’s negative assessment of the new machinery. Former F1 driver Juan Pablo Montoya also criticized Verstappen, suggesting a world champion holds a greater responsibility in their public statements.
The NOS analyst’s remarks also touched upon Verstappen’s long-term career considerations. Verstappen currently holds a contract with Red Bull Racing that extends through the 2028 season.
However, a performance-based exit clause within this contract has now been activated for the 2027 season. This clause permits Verstappen to seek opportunities elsewhere if he is not positioned within the top two of the Drivers’ Championship by the summer break.
As of July 10, 2026, Verstappen sits seventh in the championship standings. This position mathematically precludes him from reaching the top two before the summer break, thereby activating the contractual provision.
Speculation regarding Verstappen’s future has intensified, with reports linking him to potential moves to McLaren. Mercedes has reportedly declined an opportunity to sign him for 2027, with George Russell’s contract extension cited as a factor.
Verstappen’s manager, Raymond Vermeulen, has reiterated the intention to remain loyal to Red Bull. However, Vermeulen also stated that Verstappen ‘was not born to race in the midfield’. Verstappen himself has indicated that Red Bull is aware of the necessary steps to retain his services.
