Lando Norris has expressed caution regarding McLaren’s performance at the upcoming Dutch Grand Prix, despite securing victory at the Hungarian Grand Prix. The reigning World Champion emphasized that the team will not assume automatic dominance at Circuit Zandvoort. Norris concluded the first half of the 2026 season with a win in Hungary, a result significantly aided by McLaren’s latest development package.

The Woking-based team introduced a new floor at the Hungaroring, alongside other aerodynamic components. This upgrade featured reprofiled upper elements and a multi-step contour on the rear’s sail-like section. McLaren also enhanced the complexity of its floor design, extending the slotted arrangement further forward.

These updates were designed to stabilize the MCL40’s aerodynamic platform. Earlier in the 2026 season, the car demonstrated good downforce but inconsistent stability, particularly in technical track sections. The MCL40 also features the shortest wheelbase on the grid, approximately 15 cm below the 340 cm limit, which contributed to its rotation characteristics in Hungary.

Norris acknowledged the Hungarian victory provided a considerable confidence boost for both himself and the team. However, he remains focused on understanding whether the performance improvement is a universal step forward or if some gains were specific to the Hungaroring’s characteristics.

The Dutch Grand Prix marks the 12th of 23 races in the current 2026 Formula 1 season. Circuit Zandvoort is a compact 4.259 km track featuring 14 corners, including two significantly banked turns: Hugenholtzbocht at 19 degrees and Arie Luyendijkbocht at 18 degrees.

The circuit’s coastal location within sand dunes near the North Sea can lead to strong, shifting winds and sand affecting track grip. Weather conditions are often unpredictable, with a high probability of rain showers forecast for Friday and Saturday of the race weekend.

Overtaking at Zandvoort is challenging due to its tight and narrow layout, which places a premium on qualifying performance and race strategy. Tarzanbocht, Turn 1, is identified as the primary overtaking opportunity.

The circuit imposes high lateral loads and places significant stress on the front-left tyre, making tyre management a critical technical challenge. A two-stop race strategy is anticipated. For 2026, two straight-line-mode zones have been implemented at Zandvoort.

McLaren is introducing further rear-end updates at Zandvoort, including a new rear wing and modified rear brake ducts. These are intended to complete the development package initiated in Hungary. McLaren Technical Director Neil Houldey confirmed these additions.

The team experienced a challenging start to the 2026 season, including a double DNS in China. McLaren has also acknowledged that the wheelbase of its 2026 car was designed too short, which will restrict aerodynamic development until the 2027 season.

McLaren currently holds third position in the Constructors’ Championship. In the Drivers’ Championship, Andrea Kimi Antonelli of Mercedes leads with 219 points. Lewis Hamilton of Ferrari is second with 169 points, and George Russell of Mercedes is third with 160 points.

Norris is positioned fifth in the standings with 128 points, 91 points behind Antonelli. Antonelli has secured six Grand Prix victories during the 2026 season. He has also identified McLaren as a competitive rival for the Dutch Grand Prix.

Norris stated he does not focus on the championship standings at this stage of the season. He maintains the same approach that led to his success in Budapest.
