Max Verstappen has formally extended his contract with Red Bull Racing, committing to the team until the conclusion of the 2030 Formula 1 season. This announcement, made on Thursday, August 20, 2026, definitively ends widespread speculation regarding his future in the sport.

The four-time world champion had been linked with potential moves to rival teams such as Mercedes and McLaren. His previous contract was set to expire at the end of 2028, reportedly containing performance-related break clauses.

Lando Norris, the reigning world champion, offered his perspective on Verstappen’s decision. Norris indicated that Verstappen’s commitment reflects a strong desire to prove himself.

“He’s going to try and win, and Max is never going to not try. Just not going to smile as much, maybe. I guess that might be the case.”

Red Bull Racing has encountered significant challenges under the new 2026 technical regulations. The team has experienced a notable drop in performance, currently holding sixth position in the Constructors’ Championship.

Verstappen himself has been a vocal critic of the current regulations, describing the 2026 cars as akin to ‘Formula E on steroids.’ He has expressed dissatisfaction with the extensive energy management required, which limits a driver’s ability to push consistently.

Norris, who secured the 2025 Drivers’ Championship by a narrow two-point margin over Verstappen, initially joked about Verstappen’s criticisms, suggesting he could retire if unhappy with the new cars.

However, Norris later clarified that his initial remarks were intended to gauge reactions. He admitted to largely agreeing with Verstappen’s assessment that the 2026 cars do not represent the ‘purest form of racing.’

Despite this, Norris maintains that skilled drivers can still differentiate themselves, particularly through cornering, even with the new power unit energy algorithms.

The FIA, Formula One Management, teams, and power unit manufacturers have already agreed upon a package of regulatory changes for the 2027 and 2028 seasons. These amendments aim to address concerns regarding energy management and to facilitate more flat-out qualifying sessions.

The planned revisions include a rebalancing of Internal Combustion Engine and Energy Recovery System contributions, with increased ICE output and adjustments to fuel flow and energy recovery deployment. Aerodynamic changes are also slated for 2027 to manage downforce and enhance energy efficiency.

Red Bull’s current performance struggles in 2026 are partly attributed to a strategic decision to prioritize the 2025 title fight, which impacted the development of their current car.

Verstappen has achieved four podium finishes this season, including two second-place results in Austria and Hungary. He remains confident in the team’s direction under Team Principal Laurent Mekies to regain a competitive position.

The team has undergone significant personnel changes, with key figures such as Helmut Marko, Adrian Newey, and Christian Horner having departed. Additionally, Verstappen’s long-standing race engineer, Gianpiero Lambiase, is set to join McLaren no later than 2028.
