McLaren driver Lando Norris has offered a direct assessment regarding George Russell’s challenging 2026 Formula 1 season. Norris stated he holds no sympathy for Russell’s current difficulties with the Mercedes W17 car.

When questioned about Russell’s performance, Norris remarked that if a driver is struggling significantly, it suggests they are ‘not good enough’ for the specific demands of their current package.

Russell has faced considerable challenges throughout the 2026 campaign. The Mercedes W17 has proven to be a complex machine, particularly exhibiting an unpredictable rear end in high-speed cornering scenarios.

Mercedes Team Principal Toto Wolff acknowledged the W17’s difficult characteristics earlier in July. Wolff noted Russell’s ongoing efforts to adapt to the car’s handling nuances.

Technical analyses from June highlighted the W17’s innovative yet intricate aerodynamic design. This package has presented difficulties in achieving optimal performance across the diverse range of circuits this season.

Russell’s performance has been notably overshadowed by teammate Andrea Kimi Antonelli during the first half of the 2026 season. Antonelli has consistently out-qualified and out-raced Russell.

Norris further elaborated on his stance, explaining that all Formula 1 drivers encounter difficult cars at various points in their careers. He stressed that adapting to such machinery is a fundamental aspect of the profession.

Russell himself commented earlier in July on his situation. He confirmed close collaboration with Mercedes engineers to better understand and improve the W17’s overall handling characteristics.

The competitive environment within the Formula 1 paddock means drivers rarely extend sympathy to rivals. This is especially true when competitors are vying for similar positions on track.
